Way too slow, someone revealed that article before you
Plus the article Stskeeps linked to is their official press release.

Yes I already saw, not 2-3 pages back though, t'was only 1st posted on this page (157)...
Hadn't read it all yet, wasn't sure if it contained all the same info, plus it's good that it's getting coverage at Engadget too.

Ouch. Because clearly another Big Brother Inside device is what we need.

Troubling indeed. For me that's a prime reason I don't want Android. But for those less fortuned (either mentally and/or financially) it might do the trick, resulting in a larger ecosystem.

Perhaps they use the "Nexus scheme". Google releases open, pure-Android variants more or less under its own brand name as "Nexus devices". However, other companies are still free to lock up and crap up their Android devices trying to differentiate themselves. So, Jolla might release a clean, open, high-end device which can act as showcase. But other companies can create their own variants, perhaps with extra (closed source) features developed and supported by Jolla, such as this advertising-stuff.

Another way to make money, as used by Google: Android, the OS and base applications, is free and open, but those common Google-tools as Google Maps, Play store, GMail are not open and certainly not free for other manufactures.

Maybe it's community for small boat users?

Jolla Official Press Release October 2nd, 2012

I liked this part:
Jolla strongly believes and understands that the community is the heart of the distribution, technology and ideas, and is committed to supporting community involvement and participation within Sailfish.

We're also looking into mobile advertising models as a potential source of revenue:
Jolla have been quite vocal with their claims of how closely they have been working with the carriers, I guess it was only to be expected that those companies would like to have the income from the revenue stream that Advertising brings.

There is quite a few ways to block ads. Just hope they release a hwkb device with contemporary hw specs. If we can't make Fremantle boot on it, chroot is always an option

I can't say i have much of an issue with adverts, but if it prevents content from working just because i am not online to see the advert then i got an issue!

I do agree with you both here. Personally I would be waiting for the hwkb version and hope that they stick with OMAP+ARM cortex chipsets. (still got the n900s rose tinted glasses on)

As for adverts? I have seen them cripple some droids (the ex's San Francisco for one), and don't agree with them to be honest. But I have hope for Jolla and if advertisements on the OS helped to secure their contracts with the carriers then I can't really complain.

Can't wait to see what they come up with
