It was meant more as a mouth rather than a tongue, like a smiley grin, as opposed to a tongue sticking out

Now that we know how Maemo is pronounced, I believe the name sounds like a big, african animal. I can even see Ubuntu's next release name, "Mastodontic Maemo".
