In which case having a stylus and buttons on a slider indicates a hardware design failure?

I can't see why "mobile platform" should be limited to devices accessible entirely from one configuration; how is the requirement to open the slider to accomplish some tasks different than having to open a flip-phone?

My summary of this thread (and most others like it) is:

Good competition is a good thing. Under such conditions, bad ideas usually go away and great ideas usually get better. And now we're having a discussion about how we're all winning.

Thanks to all who are participating. Change can happen (and usually does) because of conversations such as this. Beer anyone?

I think you may have missed his point.

Simple, and not true.

Each task has it's own best form of input. Period.

A device which wants to do well at that task, will have an input mechanism that is well suited to that task. Period.

For some things, a physical keypad is better than virtual buttons (and even without that, a device which doesn't reduce the usable screen space by making you use a virtual keyboard will always be less useful than a device which lets you retain the full screen while also giving input; can't do that on the existing iPhone ssh clients, for example, so you're left with a cramped and annoying ssh experience). For some things, a fine tip stylus is better than a finger. A device which doesn't give you those options will be suboptimal for those tasks which excel with those input mechanisms.

Onboard keyboard stolen from Nokia N770
Area touch stolen from Nokia N770

Sad but true.
It's not stolen, since all these features have been in devices that predate the 770. Also their implementation of the touch screen feels better. I, however, prefer the n810 due to the ease and simplicity to develop for it. Also it's a familiar OS that I can use easily. But I feel that the iphone/touch did an excellent job with their user interface that's simply lacking in NITs.

Edit: I think that the n810 made an excellent choice with a physical keyboard which definitely beats pre-n810 & iphone/touch soft keyboards. Obviously IMO.

Look at the difference between the os2007 and os2008. You can clearly see that the latter is a better interface.... which i think was more driven by the competition from the touch/iphone. What i meant was that the firmware upgrade defintiely improved the user interface more because it lacked a good one initially. In all other regards you really cannot compare the tablets to any other portable device.
For any serious device there's always importance on the UI that's been there ever since Apple II's came out. Seriously UI is how your users interact with your device if you don't place the highest priority on that how do you expect anyone to use your device for more than a second. UI is the most important aspect of any application/device.

Eye candy is (obviously, IMO) bloatware from featuritis and can be done without but helps non-technical people feel a personal connection with the device. Also, eye candy is excellent for marketing purposes and demos since they create a compelling argument for using your device. Yet, eye candy doesn't create a compelling UI it just helps make your UI more interesting and easier to look at.

Both units are in different worlds.

It really shows how dumb this thread really is.

I look at it this way if the itouch had a better screen and bluetooth maybe I would like it more.

I hate companies that sucker people in all day. SONY, APPLE,

Look at PS3 hype with no good games... LOL most powerful? LOL
and I dont own a ps3 or xbox360.........

Microsoft did what they said.... Sony? Not.

Apple create a cool device but thats so did Samsung, LG, HTC, Sharp Zuars, Nokia,

Apple selling SDK kits for 100$ OMG so you can build open source code?
Open source means free right?

Their a joke. Also when Iphone sales did crappy they said it was ATT.

No it was not it was a 699$ unit with 4GB of space and a 2 year contract with minual data /voice plan.

Add it up 24 months
No, open source doesn't mean free I got where you're going with this, but open source just means you'll get the source. I know of a few projects that are open source but you need to buy the software/device (TiVo) to get the code.

Also, open source is now a marketing term rather than any meaningful term as most users of open source applications don't develop so they could careless. Open source doesn't provide any benefits over an open platform (which Steve Jobs has been telling their developers we'll have to see at this year's mac developer conference). As long as there's a motivated community developing on an any (open/closed) system then the applications [of the technology] are endless.

I actually traded my ipod touch for an n810 =) It was the first Apple device I ever purchased and I just didn't much care for it. It does do a lot of stuff very good though like web browsing for instance but in the end it just wasn't for me. I also found the battery life on the touch to be very poor as well, and apparently a lot of people are having the same problem with the device where only after a few months the battery life diminishes to only a couple hours. As a linux guy I didn't really like how restrictive the whole thing is though and I did have an n800 in the past and when I saw the opportunity to trade it for an n810, I just couldn't pass it up =) I'm glad I did it because I love my new n810 =)
