Here I'll post to just be a jerk..

It is unknown rather the Cavemen (you people) or the Renassance Men (us people) will win.
It seems to me you are backwards... the cavement would be the ones content with things as they are.. while the renaissance are those of us making our phones, devices, and tablets do things that only sci-fi writers could come up with.

That's what I kept picturing, yeah. Plus, it's a bit of a running joke at work about the way some people will try to draw distinctions between their own people and any other group of THOOOOSE people.

Ooooh.. so close! You forgot to phrase it as 'What, are you people trying to run Nokia out of business?'

When mine breaks (please no) I might have to pay more for a used one than I did for my shrinked wrapped one. Put that in your convergence pipe and smoke it.
That's exactly what I just did recently. My screen was kinda off--calibration did nothing for it, it was so bad.. and the kickstand broke. So I went and got a new N800 from uBid.com for $209. Lucky. I didn't want an N810 and, really, I love this device.

Nokia was the first one to put out a trulygreat product along the lines of a truly useful debian based Linux system, but it doesn't appear to be the last and might not even be the best pretty soon. When Pandora comes out, I fully intend to get one. Whether it'll replace my N800 will remain to be seen.. but it looks like an excellent contender for my attentions. THIS recent announcement also seems very enticing: http://gp2x-emulation.dcemu.co.uk/gp...nt-141960.html VERY portable! I REALLY like that too! And look! LOOK! A d-pad on each side.. it could actually serve as a MUCH more comfortable way to scroll things or, God forbid, be used in GAMES as trigger buttons!

Are you basically saying that Nokia can't compete with the likes of Gamepark holdings? I suppose you might only be implying they can't compete with the likes of Intel and the other tablets coming out soon?

Eh? eh? are ya?

Agreed. I would tend to think that the grunting caveman only wants the convenience of it 'just works' with a simple one-button interface he can smash with a club. While the renaissance man would want the openness and freedom of a canvas and a t-square to design something that works reliably the way he wants it to and maybe even design something altogether new without the constraints of a gruff grunting miscreant that would rather embrace constraints because they're comfortable and runs around trashing my studio and spilling all the papers over the edge and getting all in my face... I mean his face.

Do you mean new as in beer? Please explain.

I'm done kicking myself: 6 months ago buy.com had new n800s for $175. I put one in my shopping cart at about 7:00am PST. Instead of pulling the trigger, I went to run a quick errand while I thought about it. I think you can guess the rest.

I think you guys are on to something. Maybe Mr. Buchanan needs to pull a Costanza.

Wait...maybe that's me.

Naw.. I saw it up on uBid.com (new as in a new unit, manufactured in April of 2008, never opened box) and it had been posted there fresh within minutes. So I put in a BUY NOW order at their price of $209 and ordered it shipped 2-day and there it arrived. At the time, they only had 4 in stock and as soon as I'd finished ordering mine (the FIRST ONE TO ORDER!) there were three other people who'd bought it within a couple of hours, as I recall. They were quickly sold out.

Yeah, I had a couple similar experiences. One, very much like yours, with the N800, and one more recently (two weeks ago) with a $320 N810.
