So far, nothing said on this board indicates any sanity in the MS-Nokia deal for end-users or Nokia employees. The only benefits seen are for a select few at the top of Nokia (and Microsoft).
And most signs point to a pending merger between the companies.

Extraordinary claims, require extraordinary amounts of evidence, and so far there is none, just a bunch of numbers which we all knew about, and which were expected.
We all knew that Nokia was going to lose market share since their strategy was long-term, whereas others like Apple and the various Androids are pushing short-term strategies.

If Nokia needed money so bad (which I doubt), they could've sold shares to the Finnish government. (this wouldn't benefit any shareholders in the short term, but it would've allowed Nokia to fulfill their promises to end users and employees)

There is also no doubt that an MS-Nokia merger is disastrous to the economy of such a small country.

Right, which is all that the people working on MeeGo, right now, have ever promised to deliver. Yet for some reason people seem to think that what you can download is supposed to be 100% functional for day to day use.

So, why would anybody bother with it?
Most users wouldn't. Device vendors would, though.

And do you honestly believe that MeeGo will/could have provided an image that would simply work on any netbook, or the n900, in two months? C'mon. Be serious.
Any netbook? It works on a large number right now. All? No, mostly because hardware vendors have dropped the ball. N900? Yes, I believe there will be.

What is there to show for this so far this year? Where are the hardware vendors queuing up to cut out their slice of the MeeGo action?
Who knows, we're two months in.

That is not insulting anybody's hard work.
You're pretty much saying "they should just give up, as they have absolutely nothing to show for it and I can't load it on my phone and get 100% functionality right now" despite that never having been promised. Terribly misconstruing what MeeGo is about and harping on them doesn't help.

Some interesting stats so much for a "burning platform" and having to find a new ecosystem it seems symbain/ovi wasn't doing to bad in the Apps market.

http://mynokiablog.com/2011/02/17/ov...ndroid-market/

Seems Elop's destoyed a signifcant player in Ovi to replace it with one with virtually no customers in the M$ market place!

No, that is not what I said.

Nope, you said they will produce something people can use within two months. I said they have yet to produce anything people can use. Hardware vendors dropped the ball? I thought you said they would be the ones who would buy it. And the MSI Wind - didn't they invent the netbook? Seems odd for an OS targeting netbooks to not work on the netbook that started the ball rolling.

I misunderstood - MeeGo is not aimed at users, but hardware vendors. So, it is no use - to me or any other user. Why would I bother with that?

Why would you bother with that right now? To most of end user probably for no reason right now. Devels and HW manufacturers should embrace it. Most users would not even dream about system where you have cellphone that shares it´s screen and apps with screen in car right after you hop in your car. It´s something that has to be marketed. Or that when you come home you can control devices (no matter who have manufactured them or no licensing fees) with one-another. There is market for totally new kind of apps that take all these new environments in account. There is endlessly new possibilities for new apps. And growth would not be controlled because systems are open. Is it good or bad? I would embrace it.

Meego needs same boost as Android had. I would say that mindshare started to roll to Meego and devels who tried Qt and learn whole system really fall in love with it. Not all of course but some. Also noteworthy is that open source systems are getting highly popular around Europe and most importantly in government it-systems and in education. One simple reason for this is cost. Also Putin actually signed law where he forces authorities to move to Linux. Bad or good thing? I do not know, but one thing I know and that is that there is growing big amount of devels that learn in schools, universities and government projects to swim in Linux systems.

For example this blog tells you quite interesting enthusiasm about Linux and devels on it:
http://www.visionmobile.com/blog/201...10-and-beyond/

IMO MeeGo could really make new kind of ecosystem around hardware platforms such as netbooks, entry-level desktops, nettops, tablet computers, mobile computing and communications devices, in-vehicle infotainment devices, SmartTV / ConnectedTV, IPTV-boxes, smart phones, and other embedded systems. This is where Android & Chrome is going but it was not designed to go from down to top but MeeGo is.

Here is quite interesting slides:
http://www.slideshare.net/andreasc/m...?from=ss_embed
Slide 27 is quite good
"Convergence is about experience roaming Convergence is about having an experience that roams consistently across ‘screens’ "

I see no point in discussing this. I have a decent OS for my netbook, it is Ubuntu Unity. I have Maemo 5 for my n900. It is a shame that Nokia took us down the MeeGo route, because otherwise there could have been a Maemo 6 developed on the n900 that might have become available. I have little confidence that MeeGo will improve upon what I have now with Maemo. I am only interested in watching to see what becomes available through the Maemo community for the n900. If Nokia release future updates of Maemo 5, great. If there is a release of MeeGo that is straightforward to install in a way that allows my existing setup to be backed up and restored, I'd look at that. But I am not interested in MeeGo any more, only Maemo. I said some time ago that I feel it would have been better for Nokia to have teamed up with Canonical to work on a Unity implementation for mobile devices, rather than Intel & MeeGo.

I'm arguing that it may be in Nokia's best interest afterall to take MS' offer at this point, and that Elop was not purely acting against Nokia's interests in brokering this deal.
Yea I agree with you as i also feel that What Nokia did can prove to be a huge success in long run not only for Nokia but also to developers because now developers have an added choice of creating apps using WP7 and selling it worldwide.
