Here's a warning about new official Galaxy Tab firmwares!
http://www.xda-developers.com/androi...ed-bootloader/

It seems that they contain a protected bootloader that prevents custom (non-official) ROMs from being loaded on the device!

Tread carefully. I hope this isn't the case, it's quite a shame that users must *still* step quickly to avoid vendor lock-in and planned obsolescence.

Ars has a list of their favorite 2010 apps for Android:

Perhaps there are some gems in this collection...

Yeah... I've treaded carefully with regard to that. I've always played it safe with any of this stuff. I'd already ready plenty of tales of woe about screwing around with the Verizon version of the Tab anyway, so that was more reason to be patient and wait for CyanogenMod to come to the Tab before ever jumping it head-first. I just fear a 2.3 upgrade ahead of anybody figuring all this stuff out and then I lose my root. Buh.

That's probably wise. It's just such a shame that this is the case.

It will be nice when devices are open to modding in whatever fashion intended by the owner. I feel that carriers are somehow at the root of this hellish control.

Hah! I just saw the tag below that reads 'dan the troll'. It would appear that the irony of posting that tag is missed on the person that put it there, and I laughed. Hard.

Despite the attempt at a personal attack, it does make me think along these lines: I feel that it just bolsters my feeling that pointing out the strengths and weaknesses of Maemo vs Android is hitting a nerve. The sad part of that is that I really wanted Nokia to provide the winning pocket-sized Linux OS device and it's failed to do so even while they were the FIRST ones to really carve out that space for themselves and were at the top when they had Internet Tablets--that is, before they produced a "me too!" device to compete with the likes of the iPhone.

By now, we really should have had an honest-to-God Galaxy Tab-like Maemo device instead of a step-4-of-5 phone that they shoehorned a tablet OS onto. What do you think?

I 100% agree. In fact, 110% (how's that for hyperbole? ).

Nokia seems to have gone back to the drawing board more times than necessary. Back in 2005 when the 770 was debuting, they had a robust system built around the arm platform. If they had continued to build on that platform, add new features, upgrade and fix non-working parts, etc, they would be miles ahead of the competition, and certainly far ahead of their current position. But Nokia seems to have chosen the tear-down/rebuild strategy, which basically seems to have them wasting time re-implementing working things. It wreaks of a perfectionistic (yes, I made that word up) approach to design, when iterative changes would have yielded far larger gains.

There's still room for Nokia to come into the game. Of course, they will be competing with Ubuntu which really seems to be getting their act together for lower power and smaller touch-screen devices. They will also be far behind the competition which has completely eaten their lunch.

I, like you, would have *loved* a fully OSS tablet. Other than simply a POSIX complaint OS, I'm not really sure what Nokia plans to bring to market.

it seems samsung officials confirmed that the CURRENT batch of galaxy tabs will not be getting driod 3.0 ? i was told this by someone so no linky - can someone confirmed

this combined with the issues with flashong custom roms not being able to downgrade... this tab will be stuck on 2.3 at most ?

if so i wont bother with this - i will wait for the next iteration that will have 3.0 confirmed or sojme other competitor product

First, the operating system is called "Android" ("Droid" is a specific set of hardware from Verizon's line of Motorola and HTC phones).

Last time I checked, they CONFIRMED that 2.3 will be coming to the Galaxy Tab and that it's POSSIBLY getting 3.0. I can't imagine it wouldn't, but since they're not confirming it yet... all we have is that it's possibly getting it.

I don't blame you at all, honestly. If there's anything I can give Nokia credit for, it's for heightening my sense of cynicism about how companies can and will treat their customers as badly as the law will allow and to be wary of forward looking statements about any length of support.

As for texting as an excuse to confuse Android and Droid, I think I would have had far more respect for you if you had even said that you didn't know the difference. Using a generation as an excuse for poor communications is no excuse at all. If you are confusing brands and models with your mistakes, you're obviously communicating wrong.
