Hi there

I'm having hard times getting video to play straightaway on my N770 (2006). I start Canola and go into my videos, click on one of them and have to wait ages (3-4 minutes) before it starts. Sometimes the first frame shows after about 2 minutes. As soon as it opens it plays smoothly and when I choose another video it starts immediately, so it's just the first time the video player starts. After I quit Canola and start it again the same thing happens. I have tried fiddling with virtual memory setting but it doesn't seem to be of any help .
When I play the videos in Mplayer they play just fine, I only have to wait 2-3 seconds before they start.
Has anyone experienced similar problems? I'm not quite sure whether it's a bug or N700's hardware limitations.
I use the latest Mplayer as well as Python 2.5
Other than the videos everyone works great.

I would like to thank handful and the team for creating this awesome piece of software. Keep it up!

Hi roberto,

It seems that we are hitting against a mix of canola2 architecture x platform architecture x device limitations.

Talking with the guys, they told me that is probable that When canola talks to it's media engine (ATABAKE, which takes care of who is going to play a media file) it uses DBUS, and it's possible that DBUS messages are being delayed between this communication, thus it takes time to mplayer start. Also the fact that also maybe happening some swap of memory thus leading to more delays (as canola is not a light application)

We received this complaint, and we will investigate further.. but if we come to a conclusion that to help this we need to change too much in the architecture (and it's not needed for the 2 newer devices) unfortunately we don't go that way, as we want to promote the platform not run against it.

But if in the future these bottlenecks starts to appears to much we will try to come up with something.

Anyways this are the suspects, and we will investigate further to see what we can do!

I tried following the instructions on the website but Canola doesn't load. When I run it in terminal using Canola -vvvv I get this :

~ $ canola -v
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/bin/canola", line 30, in <module>
mger = Manager("/etc/canola.conf")
File "/singleton.py", line 25, in __call__
File "/manager.py", line 41, in __init__
File "/manager.py", line 46, in _load_config
File "/terra_config.py", line 19, in __init__
File "/terra_config.py", line 24, in _load
IOError: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: '/etc/canola.conf'

I copied it and pasted it from another thread someone posted back in December with trying to install an earlier version (it was teh only search result that I got back after searching for IOError on this site... so I imagine no one else has posted this same error message in this thread...)

@ylsf : please help us out =) what device what version and :

1) repositories you have
2) did you have beta 1 of canola2 installed? or Canola1 ? Unninstalled them correctly?

It seems that the installation process failed, and you are trying to run a corrupted version (missing the config file)

Anyways.. I will pass this to the guys to see if they can be of more help!

Really enjoying Canola. Thanks!

One question : most of my library is in .m4a format from iTunes. I notice that only .mp3 tracks are getting album artwork, and are being correctly organized into artist and album categories. Does this mean I should convert my library to .mp3, or am I doing something wrong?

IIRC, the change log states that organization of M4A files are not yet supported :

http://openbossa.indt.org.br/canola/using.html

My [FLAC, M4A, AAC] music doesn't get organized! Sorry but we are also adding support format by format. We had only mp3, now we have ogg and wma and in the near future all the formats supported by the platform will be properly supported inside Canola.

It's kinda useful to read the developer's page on known issues before you blindly install software, just so you don't get any surprises

Aha! Thanks for pointing me to that. I'll hang on for a while before converting all my music then.

I had the same 'problem' in the past, but IMHO, if you're using run-of-the-mill earphones from Sony (e.g. EX-71, etc), the sound quality of M4As doesn't make enough difference on the go to warrant the extra 40% of storage space that M4A files suck up

I searched this thread for an answer...but I can't find one. I am trying to install on my 770 Gregale. When I click "Install" the window pops up that says "Downloading 4.63MB" but then nothing happens (nothing downloads). What's wrong?

Hi Neil,

first if something is wrong, then somethings is written to the "log"
Can you take a look in the application manager menu and send us the log?

It's most probably that you're a facing one of the installation problems due to application manager x package madness.

So you can do the removal using pablob tips:

http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...ad.php?t=16051

and then install again using the ssh (or xterm) but I recommend using SSH :

Tip by stoo :
http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...ad.php?t=16075

This will for sure fix it.

Of course, if you don't have anything important right now on the device there's the easiest but we don't recommend because people can lose their other applications :
Flash the device and first thing install canola. It will work for sure.

After that be sure to install mplayer and canola-tuning

BR
