You don't need a windows machine. Just your tablet. Just follow nemo's directions and you'll be fine.

EDIT: but you will need your tablet to be connected to the internet.

Thanks everyone, glad to help out when I can. I may not know what the hell I'm doing but I can copy and past like no one else!

@bunanson: No typos and I typed the whole damn thing on my n800!

@gemniii42: exactly, which is why step 6 is how to exit red pill mode.

Oh, and some more basic info, I did this on my N800 with OS2008 so I can't vouch for it's effectiveness on other systems.

That is how bunanson started with a 770, "I may not know what the hell I'm doing but glad to help out when I can", 10 monthes ago.

Keep up the good work, it is very rewarding and fun, and again, thanks for the step to step guide.

(...).
Thanks a lot! I never got around to it because of the information being so spread out through this long thread, just like lots of other neat hacks that stay buried in long threads. This how-to, with a disclaimer about the risks involved included, would be great for the wiki. I did notice a small omission though. Right after 'Type cd kernel_flasher/' I needed to do a 'chmod +x *' to make the scripts executable.

That's odd, I used that method twice (once to do it, and once after I reflashed the kernel just to make sure I knew how) and never had to use 'chmod' ... which is good because I have no idea what it is.

Any chance other people can duplicate the results with/without chmod so we can figure out the difference?

I forgot to mention that I did the downloading and extracting on my laptop (running linux) and copied the files to the tablet using sftp. It could be that that affects the execute permissions. 'chmod' changes who can read/write/execute a file or folder.

Probably did. kernel_flasher has the right permissions by default and being in a tgz would preserve those permissions.

same here. I did it 4x already, 2 on flash boot and 2 on MMC boot, the instructions are complete. No additional modifications needed.

Edit: You guys already figure out

cool, glad that's taken care of. I'm a bit of a perfectionist so if I missed something I'd feel the need to update it immediately.

And a wiki of this might not be such a bad idea (including the chmod part should someone else use that method).

I'll see if I can figure out how to submit to said wiki unless someone else feels up to it.
