Can't test anything right now as I'm going out to celebrate the New Year (HNY everyone!)

The preset from the wiki is very slow and big, but produces awesome results - I got a 1.9gb file from a 1 hour dvd. But it's beautiful.

The preset from Fatalsaint is quicker, and will turn 2 hours of Clangers into about half a gb... though as Fatalsaint said, Clangers are old and grainy - and knitted (basically, I have a collection of classic childrens TV from my childhood...)

I'll happily test stuff again tomorrow. I still have more Clangers, Trumpton and Mr Benn to do...

If you want the original .plist file back Fatalsaint, let me know - I still have it.

I'm off to start a thread about skype for New Year...

Check one thing for me... Under the "Video" tab of the Handbrake when you select the preset - Do you see the bitrate option selected, and "600" in the text field?
No, is selected Constant Quality and the value is 36.67% QP: 20

Kathy, when you get around to it check for me if your Video tab also says CQ with a QP of 20 like chris_pm, or if yours says Bitrate with the 600.

If the latter, then yes.. I would like the plist file back please . When I heard it didn't work I deleted it and have to now try and figure out what I did to get it back to working .

I too have the same as Chris_pm. And it worked fine for me.

I resaved it as a text and attach it for you, anyway.

I think so - I have two of them, and I'm pretty sure that one was Fatalsaints. The other one is from the wiki and is much more complex.

However, I can say that the result is nothing short of awesome! The files I've been playing with so far are 1960s and 70s childrens animations, so quality was not perfect on the originals, and I couldn't really comment of the quality of output. This, on the other hand, was a high quality video of classical music and footage of streams, sea and wildlife. And effect is stunning. It really makes the most of the n900's gorgeous screen resolution.

So now my n900 has hours of amusement watching kiddies shows and something classy and relaxing for those stressy moments when even liqflow can't calm me down.
If you're a fan of cartoons check out http://www.70scartoons.co.uk/
There's a listing of many cartoons and it helps to remember those forgotton.

Did you ever watch Mary, Mungo & Midge ? I only know that one because a former manager at work brought it in once and we were watching it on someone's portable DVD. And it took me an hour to dig up the DVD trying to remember the name for you!

If you like [American] humour in cartoons try out Futurama or Family Dad, if you haven't already.

Your next step in reducing the file sizes is to use the Xvid codec (supported in all vanilla N900s). This should get you most movies at good quality down to a size of 650mb-1gb depending on length. Without having used Handbrake for over a year, my guess would be that you can try changing the codec to encode to. If it asks for an extension and forces you to change from the default, choose .avi.

And try with a short video clip, a short cartoon or music video will be ideal so you don't sit around waiting for ages.
