Yep - and applications should be able to use them for their own purposes (except the power button ? & maybe also a global switch enabling/disabling application access to buttons).

Possible uses for hardware buttons:
  • zoom in/out
  • turn pages
  • trigger rerouting
  • take a picture
  • start/stop/pause recording
  • jump to task switcher
  • toggle flashlight (long press ?)
  • full-screen toggle

Every button can be assigned at least two actions (press + press hold). Of course, there are also more advanced possibilities (double-press, button combinations).

Physical buttons also have the important advantage of tactile feedback - you can easily press them without looking at the device or in adverse visual (darkness, heavy sun) and motoric (gloves, in a shaking vehicle) conditions.

good points about button usage. combine that with gesture-based navigations like swipe (where the user is not forced to use the button to navigate) and you've got a winner.

I own an N9 and an iphone 4s and i absolutely detest having to bend my thumb to use that damn iphone button (i only use it for video anyway).

Same to you. I guess you would have 0 thanks without my posts. I'm a thanks generator for people that don't contribute and at the same time post the same useless post.

You could add the line to you footer, like don_falcone. It's much easier to identify members who only gets thanks by attacking other members. Keep it up. Keep your posts off topic and see where it takes you.

Back to topic please.

Great advice, but I don't want the time to pass quicker. It's more that Jolla should be quicker.

I take your advice and going for a fishing trip. I might catch a sailfish

This is what _i_ call touch-/finger-friendly (and why i insist on mechanical computer keyboards with regular layout - i KNOW (feel) the CTRL key is left to the cursor keys).

While it had its own conditions, i really miss the scroll wheel from my Trekstor Vibez player. Now i have to cope with the crappy capacitive touch-controls of Cowon players. At least there are still volume buttons. Wondering when those will be omitted too. F*ck designers.

So, let's see how they will implement haptics.

JussiHurmola is demoted to master of Sailfish and Marc Dillon stepping up as CEO. Who takes Marcs old position is unknown tp me. Maybe no one.

Very strange change so early in the game. Let's hope it's for the best.

Edit: seems that jussi was promoted. My Bad. He is moving to the Jolla Board!

Just read the Techcrunch article.

The thing that concerns me is this bit of their description "with a strong focus on China".
Made alarm bells ring

I honestly didn’t think Jolla would release a qwerty phone in the near future, but it seems quite likely they'll do!

True, but it's not a done deal yet. The intressting here the customer base they are targeting with this first device. I'm not sure how the public user using their smartphone in china. But I doubt a keyboard version would win a voteing contest anywhere in the world. No the meego community that voted at jollatides.com are exreamly small in a big sea of users. Now, they might release a beta phone for the community and devs to helping them to create a ecosystem of some sort and move to a thin screen phone to compete for market shares.

I hope for a keyboard device in any state. But a keyboard version means more advanced construction if we are talking quality hardware.

I still don't belive a keyboard version UNTIL I sees it
