Since that seemed to be the last word--I guess I was right, the status of Maemo is indeed "embarrassing?"

Perhaps I missed an earlier point, but how is the OS (presumably Meego) becoming less open than Maemo? Or do you mean that Android is becoming more open than Maemo/Meego?

I've also got to disagree with your evaluation of Android as open - the hw abstraction layers certainly seem to me to be very closed. Even more so than Maemo originally was, and much of the user-facing code is also closed afaiu (application-wise, which was also the issue with Maemo).

I was pointing out that Maemo is FAR less open than Android, according to the statistics that were gathered a while back. I was also pointing out how the Android operating system is growing increasingly less dependent and separating from the closed-source applications, unlike Maemo. Even as Maemo progressed, it continued to accrue more and more closed-source, even while a trickle of closed-source became open. You might want to go back and read some more of this thread. MeeGo is a different beast which has NONE of that stupid closed-minded drek to deal with--except unless Nokia's flavor of an OS image has had extensive work to implement it right back in there, as I'm dreading might be the case--but none of us know that for certain yet.

Excellent! I'm eagerly awaiting SOMETHING to be said by the Council and I'm especially interested to know whether Nokia has shut them out or whether Nokia is communicating ANYTHING to them, at this point.

All that I have seen from Nokia employees so far has indicated that everyone below the topmost levels of management has been told to carry on with business as usual while top management develops a plan for enacting Nokia's new corporate strategy. Therefore, despite all public signs pointing to continued Nokia-Council communications, I would limit my expectations on what the Council will be able to announce regarding Nokia's future support of maemo.org and specifics on Nokia's long term plans for MeeGo.

Let's not compare apples and oranges. The statistics you saw were simple calculations based on package counts in Maemo (which in itself is an ambiguous metric). Android does not use the same packaging policies, and also is heavily reliant on web-based services that themselves are not necessarily open (even though the client side *might* be), therefore *real* comparison is very difficult.
