The issue about increasing resolution that it's by no means 'free'. Drawing even 800x480 pixels on screen takes a lot more power and processing than say 320x480. The tablet is currently slower because of that than what it could have been. Every pixel takes some operations, essentially, making the device slower. Not to mention if the size is increased even more. I'd personally say that the 800x480 resolution is really good already

'course not, but, either way, we're still waaaay better off with the OMAP3430 and its 1024x768-capable LCD controller than the re-tasked 14.4k modem Nokia is using as a controller for OMAP2.

Not necessarily true. Palm was able to go from Grayscale to color.. then 160x160 to 320x320 to 320x480 without breaking legacy apps.

You can make them even crisper than they are, you can make fonts smaller (although you can right now, too; resolution's not limiting on this at present) and in fact you can make gui elements smaller, at the cost of having to use the stylus; this is useful for ported apps.

And there are too many things designed around pixel spacings (notably on the web) that would be usable fit to the N8x0 display's size, but demand more pixels.

I think on a 5" screen, going as far as 1280x800 is the threshold of usefulness; anything over that probably won't help. But we're still way short of that.
Cripes, I already have to use +2 reading glasses to do any appreciable work on my N800 (yes, I'm >40, actually 46, and I hit the "needs reading glasses @ 40 right on schedule!).

That said, I'm with you on the 1280x800!

Agreed. If anything changed in that regard, I'd prefer the screen size increase a bit.

It also only lasts until you reboot.

liqbase has a nice gui option for changing this

heh, this was meant to be a reply to qole from 3 pages back

Performance simply keeps it at the same maximum; 400 without DSP, but dropping to 330 whenever there's a DSP task.
There is slightly more to it. It drops to 330 only for dynamic dsp tasks, not any dsp tasks. Dynamic are those loaded by dsp_dld, static are those compiled into dsp kernel. They are no different otherwise, this is just policy. The static ones are exception and are used for uncompressed audio output/input. I guess one of reasons is to have flash in browser play videos better (@400MHz) with sound.

Yes, OMAP3430 will bring benefits also in this area.

I personally have no problem with the controller.
The biggest upset is that I cannot enlist the help of the custom chips to take some of the strain.

ragnar, as far as you can tell so far, will we have access to all of the features of the omap3430, or do you simply not know yet?

Yes, well, you're cheating. It's clearly a bottleneck for people who are not.

The information available is what's available. We're getting PowerVR drivers and OpenMAX will make DSP usage a lot more straightforward. What more do you need to know?
