Even when the guy that runs the place (Steve Paine aka Chippy) recently updated the forum software (and consolidated it under the meetmobility.com url) he still left subforums for Nokia and each of the specific devices (even the 770!). While umpcportal is mainly focused on what he considered productivity devices, he until recently owned a N810 (tho largely unused since android happened, and he put it up for sale recently to fund new review devices).

He also runs meegonews.com, carrypad.com (tho most of the traffic there is by others right now, as he refocused his efforts on umpcportal and being a stay at home dad) and meetmobility.com.

IF we want to redefine the functions of the Community Council to something broader than serving as a negotiating point between community and Nokia, we need to have more directed discussion about what exactly we want to do, which currently is happening in a haphazard manner.

I am assuming everyone (who wants to keep Maemo support going past the Nokia plug-pull) thinks we want to EVENTUALLY create a new repository mirror for the Extras(-testing/-devel) repositories. Because if I recall correctly the schedule for the end of Nokia funding was end of 2012 (if I recall correctly from another post - readers, please don't assume I'm right until someone else verifies). This doesn't need to be done now, but we need to be ready for it BEFORE the plug pull, and if this is ever to happen, we need to start planning for it now - i.e. we need to vote to give the Community Council power to appropriate donations and to perform server renting, site administration, etc, on behalf of the community. If we do this, we also need to consider a demand for transparency - if donations get handled by the Council, we'll need to expect that we know what money is going where and how. IF we do that, in turn we need to think of some financial structure to the 'community' and the Council, in that the money should ideally not be stored in some community member's bank account, etc. We can either iron the details out beforehand, or grant the logistic-determining powers to the council as part of the vote that's coming up whenever, BUT if we do the latter, the transparency aspect should still apply - I.E council should have the power to make the plans but the plan should be gone over with the community publicly before being put in action.
I really appreciate these comments and others like it. Although time passes quickly, it is difficult that there are six months between elections to decide things. I believe I am the only council member actually working in the general direction you've described for logistics-determining authority and transparency. I can use all the help I can get.

We do need to have a vote due to those people who think maemo community should be wound down. I've made a blog posting and forum thread on the vote.

Please continue the discussion of council authority (particularly the referendum on which people should vote) there.

Excuse me, but anyone who thinks that by definition isn't a part of the maemo community anymore and shouldn't be influencing decision making for those who are.

The size and complexity of Qt is incomparable with GTK/TK/TCL. Installing good GTK is possible. But fixing Qt bugs... It has some intrinsic design problems and fixing it may be a pain. Especially, if it is owned by somebody who is not in Linux favor.

But the reality is that the Maemo trademark is already on life support (and will soon be dead and buried). To me there are two ways to go: 1) Close down 2) Move to a Meego branded domain

My vote clearly goes to #2.

You do realise that anything related to Fremantle and earlier is not welcome on meego.com, and even talking about Harmattan outside of forum.meego.com will get you flamed, right?

If so, and you still want to go to meego, by all means feel free. But you don't get to burn the house behind you, sorry.

The house is already burning, you have to be blind to not see it.
