My Pre 3, which I still have, has alphanumeric keys accessible using the special White key. And less common punctuation is software accessible using a popup (kinda like how the BB Passport handles that).

Also the snappiness of the keys can wear off after prolonged use giving a rather heavy feeling resulting in even more wear of the keys surface.
Pre3 has some rubber gel type keyboard keys with the text sunken deeper, which are more resistant to visual wear by finger nails.
The weak point for both lays in the hinge which can show early wear due to penetrating sand, dust and moisture and run dry.
Especially the N900's keyboard sliding mechanism can suffer a lot when the user has the habbit of pushing the wide keyboard open from one side instead of keeping it centered.
In time sharp plate steel will cut through its plastic sliding guidance counterpart eventually creating play and finally steel on steel sliding end game when you don't push they keyboard open evenly.
Personally I encounter more HW keyboard issues with the N900's than USB port issues.
So Jolla N3rd edtion with keyboard could offer Treo / Pre style keys and an easily serviceable low friction keyboard bearing.

Having used N900, HP Veer and Palm Pre 2 (and I expect Pre 3 to be the same), I am quite strongly against rubber buttons. Typing on my N900 is way better as my fingers don't stick to it and it provides a firm feedback.
Pre's keyboard is not bad (better than none), but it would be much better without those rubbery keys. Just my 2 cents...

Having typed on my trusty Pre 3 for 1,5 years and tried out a few other keyboard phones, I actually like the Pre 3's the best still. The rubber coating actually makes the keys a bit more sticky which is nice for me because I my fingers don't slip off the key hitting the wrong one, like I experienced when I tried out the Motorola Milestone in store. The feedback is also pretty good, on par with BB I'd say. The only thing that could've been better would've been the spacing as the keys are a bit cramped.
