I agree it's useful to navigate with the screen off. That's usually how I navigate with TomTom, I don't even have the device in visible range, I just listen to Jane.
if you dont look at sygic how will you know the name of the street you are supposed to turn on? unles syou have a damn good eye for "200 meters" i have to look at the screen because the next st name to take action on shows on the screen for me

I don't need the street name to know where to turn, the distance is unambiguous to me. In any case, trying to read a street name off the screen would IMO be dangerous (in Italy you could be dead if you look at something else than the road for more than 2 seconds). With TomTom it'll also notice me at 50 meters, and again exactly when it's time to turn.

I haven't yet done this with Sygic. But then again the new upgrade version (which allows the GPS to continue working with the screen off) just came out the other day.

happy to hear about a update. do you know if i have to pay to update it?

I think its cool that you dont need to look at the phone. but what f you are driving say 45 miles per hr? thats to fast to turn on a dime right? but i suppose if you understand how far a meter is it shouldnt be a prob unless you come to a intersection with multiple streets. then it could be a bit of a prob no?

The update is free. Though you have to add the Sygic repo.

No, it's free. It's just a small updated version.

Well, I obviously slow down when I hear '200 meters'. Actually it'll warn a bit earlier when I go fast (IIRC - I used it a lot last year, not this year). So when it's time to turn I'm not going fast anymore. Due to the accuracy of TT it's not a problem (so far) to figure out the correct turn. There was and incident once with a roundabout with 7 exits that I had to go a couple of rounds, and not only look at the screen but also switch it from 3D to 2D (or possibly the other way around) to see which exit to use. Actualy now when I think about it I had to finally leave at the wrong exit, re-set the display mode, go back, and then I found the right exit. But that was an exception. You don't see 7-exit roundabouts very often.

As said earlier, I haven't yet tried this with Sygic. With the one-that-shall-go-unnamed-but-ends-in-"lost", though, I couldn't figure out the right exit 50% of the time. That navigation system was horrible. Too much latency, inaccurate, wouldn't recalculate when I did a wrong turn, etc.

Hello,

Just to confirm that with the new Sygic 7.71.1 the GPS receiver now works even with the device screen locked.

Just what I needed to use it on my bike hearing the audio with bluetooth!

Street names are horrible, my girlfriend has a Garmin that does that if you select a certain voice, after 1 try we switched over to the one that doesnt do that. How annoying was that, street names can be long and when it spoke it you could already past it, or if you have quickly go left, right, left then it is even more a mess. Not to say if it speaks the name (which is horrible pronounced also....) then you still need to be able to read the name of the street sign, so you have to find the sign, then read it, but that all takes time.

Way better is just to look on the map, and if the map doesnt lag (which it did before the update) this is a bit annoying, but now with one look at sygic and you know ok, its the road after the next one.

There is no need for you to use x term. Simply use a text editor ( I am using Leafpad ) and open the file settings.ini located in YourPhoneNameHere/Drive/Maemo/ where "YourPhoneNameHere" is the name you gave your phone. In this file you will find all the entries you are looking for. After the latest update, the map lagging seems to be almost gone with the stock settings.ini, at least on my phone.
