Good to know, but this leaves a very important question:

Why the hell would such a supposedly simple widget bind to port 53 (I guess it just reads data from the net, it shouldn't have any business acting as DNS server [and if it's not acting as DNS server it has even less business binding to the port]).

Via USB everything now works, everything except for pinging the n900. Pinging the outside world works great, and SSH to the n900 works as well, but ping just gives timeouts.

I used the same settings as wifihotspot, but everything stuffed into /etc/network/interfaces. I'll post that later on once I'm sure everything is ok. Any idea why this wouldn't allow ping?

Also, I have tried this without WEP, but connecting simply won't work. So it turns out it's a wifi issue, not an iptables/masquerading issue.

Upgrade to PR1.2 seemed to have lost "Dummy" access point from N900, so I cannot get to Internet through BT/USB although the network itself would work.

apt-get install libicd-network-dummy

does not find that package.

How to get AP "dummy"?

Code:
wlan0: No active IBSS STAs - trying to scan for other IBSS networks with same SSID (merge)
uname -r: 2.6.28.10power37

now there's a helpful error message, true to windows tradition /sarcasm.

what ip do you get from the dhcp sever on n900? can you ping the n900 from the laptop ? what does "traceroute 8.8.8.8" output?

LOL!
It's always like when my mom calls my house telling me, "My Internet is not working, Windows says there is a an error and it can fix it"
Should I click troubleshooting?"

Yeah... like windows can troubleshoot anything...
