seriously,if i own this website i would scrap all maemo, meego projects and start sailfish, firefox, android forks, ubunto for next gen devices. nokia n900 is meaningless now with maemo and meego.
atleast better start a new forum for new age os

Regarding FT232 and such, an alternative would be the concept of IDBG, the Interrnal Debug Board:

It's a small MCU that has a USB stack and manipulates the "master" CPU. One benefit over an FTDI chip is that one can implement additional things, such as remote-controlled reset, I2C, etc. (The FTDIs have GPIOs as well, but they're sometimes harder to use than one may think.)
Drawback: needs to be programmed before it can do anything. The C8051F326 may still be a good choice for this.
