Yeah, it's pretty easy to sum it up: Nokia, in their stupidity, surface-mounted the USB connector without any other physical securement. Thus, after yanking around for a while, the connector will peel off the board, usually taking the solder pads with it.

The dirty part is that other manufacturers have been doing the same thing, no doubt to save a buck (literally), and the same thing has been happening to them, too. So, no matter what you buy, you'd better check and make sure that port isn't surface-mounted!

As for me, no problems so far in almost 3 months of use...

So I got my angled cable, and the moment I opened the envelope and looked at it I knew it wouldn't work: the damn thing is WAY TOO BIG!!! For a little 5" extension cable, this thing is built rugged with huge connectors and THICK cable--I doubt you could break this cable with too much flexing any time soon.

The main down side is the male connector is, to me, absolutely enormous and there's no way to make the Noreve flap close with it on unless I cut a hole--which kills the port saver idea because you have the connector hanging out to get hit by anything.

The one silver lining is that this requires so little insertion and removal force that I don't think I'll have to do any filing if I use this all the time; this also helps for GPS use or similar, though it's makes holding while connected to a charger a pain.

Here are some pictures that hopefully explain the situation. The cable plugged into the female end is the original Nokia wall-wart charger; I'm not sure if it comes out in the photos, but I think the charger cable is only 1/3rd the diameter of the extension cable!

I wrote an e-mail to Rick at usbfirewire.com where I bought this including this same photos; maybe he can find a smaller connector. Ideally, one made like those tiny Bluetooth or USB dongles that barely stick out would be ideal: micro or not, I figure if they can stick active electronics in there, why not a thin cable?

guys i am not that technical but let me suggest something for the displaced micro usb slot
first of all i have seen the deassembly video link on how to open the N900
i watched it like 2 times
cant you open the device as shown in the video
then solder that micro usb into the main frame by means of small metallic pins or even better that epxoy resin adhesive tubes, there are colorless varients of it in the market right now

i know it sounds a little off the norm but come on you bought the N900 in the first place over so many other devices, you got that adventures spirit inside of you, what i am suggesting here is that as you already lost that thing mounting mechansim, you could take a further step and try to do it yourself if you got the technical background

or even better couldnt you just copy that disassembly video from you tube, then go to somekind of repair shop for mobile phones and ask the guy there to follow the video and re insert that micro usb slot again but this time securely enough

i know it would void you warranty but come on guys it seems nokia doesnt care and even wont so why would you hold on to a warranty that the company itself wont stick to?

the second option which is when compared to my first would be total insanity is simply to open the device, then replace that micro usb slot with that normal socket used for charging (the 2 mm charger pin i guess) then connect all the stuff in there probably and voala
nice normal charger socket
and for the data transfer you will be stuck by then with bluetooth i guess
-----------

i hope my insanity would help someone figure something out

Right. So mine came apart about a week ago.

I did backups to microsd with a friends battery and took the device to my operator. Three days later (or maybe 4) got a brand new n900. Just the old battery and batterycover were left from the original. And in that time the phone had been sent to Helsinki.

Actually I was pretty amazed on how smoothly and quickly everything went.

(Only downside is that in the meantime, I lost the microsd with all the backups =/... )

Hello everyone.

Well the same issue happened to me this time last month

I went to charge my phone and realised it wasnt charging....then I i pulled out and reconnected the charger...... the USB came out!

I took the phone along to Carphonewarehouse (who is a Nokia Repair Centre) and the guy said "Oh thats a known issue" we should have it back to you within 24 hours and its under warrenty.

24 hours later I checked the status online and its says "Due to nature of repair we have to send the device to our Central Repair Centre which will add 10 days to the turnaround time"

Ten days later and I check the status. This time it says "We are sending this to the manufacturer as we cannot fix it. Please allow 28 days"

Well last friday I got a call and email to advise that my phone is back from NOKIA...UNREPAIRED....with a serious fault that is not covered by Warrenty!

I have emailed Nokia Care Europe and to be fair they came back quite quickly wanting to know the IMEI etc

I collected the handset from Carphonewarehouse and the lady said that all the notes said was "BER" a.k.a Beyond Economical Repair. I have a lovely JPEG of my device which I presume was taken at the workshop...with large red letters printed on it stating

"Physical Damage Charger Con Broken off"

I simply unplugged and plugged the charger back in. Does this constitute Physical damage??!

Ive emailed Nokia back with the IMEI etc tonight but doubt they can do much at its BER?

Anyone have any views/tips on what I can do?

hey guys i posted this earlier in another thread but with zero responses
so plese try replying and help me

i want to share with you my problem in deciding a good phone for me
it's kind of a long story, so please try to make time to read it and help me

i was looking for a nice powerfull phone for like ages, and back in the day when the nokia E71 hit the markets i was really happy by the idea of full physical qwerty, not to mention the sleekness of the device, but the price tag was on the heavy side for me back then

so i settled for nokia E63 which as most of you know, was the next best thing to the E71
since day one with it i didnt like the feel of the keys, not to mention the processing power on it, so sadly enough i sold it and settled for a nokia 6500 slide
for me back then i liked the formfactor, the nice camera with powerfull flash
but a 100% phone is out of range it seems !!
the phone got stolen after like being with me for almost more than a year, it was so nice that i didnt think twice and went on and bought me the new 6500 slide black edition
same goes for the original 6500 slide except with somehow better software
and for another year it was fine
till my demandes changed and i really wanted a bigger screen that i can open pdf books on, qwerty physical keyboard to take notes and possibility to edit some word documents as well

since that time i was totally disappointed with most of the phones on the market
nothing seemed the exact match to my needs
even the rock solid E72 had a very minor issue with me, its his small screen not to mention the resolution (which i dont care that much about) but the keys on it omg, one of my friends had it and i thought about giving it a try
i typed insantly on it with a very good speed with almost no typoes whats so ever
i was amazed how the new processor on it worked like charm
gps navigation is rock solid wifi is awesome everything is exactly what i needed in a phone
except of course of that goddam small screen
i looked into the nokia N97 mini, but it had it's share of disappointments that nokia seems to like giving it's fans lately, either with the original N97 or the N97 mini or even with the brand new disguise of the N97 mini (or is it a blend between N97 design & N97 mini guts) who knows!!
the so called nokia C6
it's another shame for nokia regarding the specs, which is like a copy of the N97 mini, with the D pad on the right side this time

wake up nokia, i dont know about you guys but if it was me in those shoes of nokia designers team, it would be a total different thing with high end nokia devices
i wouldnt even let people think about loosing their money for the so called i phone
i hate i phone and what it stands for
anyhow back to the topic
as i didnt find the device i was looking for i settled for the time being with a nokia 6700 slide (may be i am addicted to the sliding phones who knows)
but for now i have been doing some home work on the N900
i simply adore it
i have seen most of the reviews on you tube
read almost all i can find on the user experience about it as well

cause it's not that cheap even now at this time here in egypt, it's price tag is around 550-570 usd unlocked of course
(here in egypt its not the trend to lock phones, except of course for the i phone but who cares about that)
the price range of the nokia E72 is around 390-410 usd

anyhow yesterday i went for a store and got hold of the phone and played around a little bit with it
it was exactly what i was looking for all those years
nice big screen
physical qwerty ( i dont know if it is my E63 experience and E72 try , but i didnt think i would enjoy typing on the N900, i found it a little hard specially the space bar, so please tell me about typing experience and does the practice help getting over it)
powerfull unlimited potential operating system

what made me didnt buy it was my doubts over the battery so i thought to get back home and google it more
thats when i found this forum and had been reading it to find out when i was crushed by that micro usb connector issue

i adore the N900 but what good is a phone that cant be charged
i didnt find any updates on that issue and i really want you guys to guide me on this

i miss the sweet old days when i used to have siemens sx1, i used to install hacked firmwares on it and modded as well
it was the very best time ever for me to be able to modify the phone to my likings
so you see i cant wait till i get my own N900 and start trying everything there is with it
i am counting on your experience and guidance
should i buy it or go with the crowd with a reliable E72

and if i may add a question does the N900 has a network independant GPS just like the E72 or do i need a constant streaming of data over my network carrier for it to lock?

i am so sorry for all that long story but i really need help and i am glad that i found a forum dedicated to the device i adore although the so called good folks of Nokia decided to let go of such a device with endless potentials

waiting your response soon
thanks alot

guys your answer would be greatly appreciated i cant wait more

hi amir,

u wrote to long.. lol.. here's my stories..

i bought faulty unit n900 (broken usb), then ask my fren at phone shop to put a new micro usb. then he put a quite hard rubber on top of the micro usb so when put back the cover, the micro usb will be place there with a support of the rubber on top of it.. it might prevent the micro usb to be loosen back.. then bout the charger connector, i just grind the hook so it will not hard to pull the charger, another way atleast to prevent the micro usb broken.. now already 5 days only.. will update time to time..

p/s: use back the micro usb, u need to use the data cable for flashing back.. and yes, the phone can be open ur self.. just need a right tools. btw if u want to buy new phone.. just wait for n9 that should my my next phone.. lol

forgot to answer this.. "and if i may add a question does the N900 has a network independant GPS just like the E72 or do i need a constant streaming of data over my network carrier for it to lock?"

n900 got an option to choose if u want it to work with network carrier or only by the gps it self.. the network carrier option + the built in gps is the faster to lock ur location..

here's what i read from other forum..
A-GPS ( Assist GPS ) - Speed up lock time by retrieve gps location using data from server (Chargable 10cent per lock)

I-GPS (Integated GPS)- Use internal attenna to get a lock the gps (FREE ) but slow and you can choose to work with A-gps to speed up lock time

Network GPS - Speed up constant lock to satelitte by using data from server ( Chargable up to RM5) per destination.

Bluetooth GPS - You can improve the GPS performance by using 3rd party GPS device but drain the phone battery very fast.

---

I-gps only
Pros: FREE
Cons: Slow locktime

I-gps + A-gps only
Pros: Faster locktime about 5-10sec to get a lock
Cons: A minor fee apply like 10cent per request to satelitte

I-gps + Network GPS only
Pros: Very stable GPS connection and fast lock time
Cons: Major fee can reach up to RM5 or more per destination

Bluetooth GPS
Pros: Faster locktime and FREE
Cons: Burden of carrying two device and heavy battery drain on device
*correct me if im wrong
