Better run the ce instead which is completely open, except for the gpu driver. And I agree with Nokia here as if they open up their ux some asian copy cats might as well launch an M9 or something even before Nokia gets the N9 out the doors. Nokia need to get their investment back. and fast.
Speaking of "this guy never stops now, does he?" ...seriously? That's what Nokia is afraid of? That somebody else will come along and make a better product if they open-source the DRIVER for a piece of hardware? OMIGOD they're afraid they'll eat their lunch?? Talk about insecurity. How about they simply run a GOOD BUSINESS and stop the pretenses that they're somehow improving their product with closed-source drivers of all things. Additionally, it's more than the UX and and drivers, as I recall. Wasn't there a LOT more closed-source involved in the whole basic system itself as well? (ala Maemo, which has PLENTY of closed-source)

Which has been over-told that they can't, because it's not their driver. It's TI's.
Then if they release the UI, it is pretty conceivable that it will be reused, yes, especially in the targeted markets (developing countries).

On the face of it that sounds like a semi-reasonable excuse, until you start thinking about it. How many devices reused the Fremantle UI, which was open? AFAIK the only non-Nokia people who touched that code were in the maemo.org community, in order to improve it. Did Nokia see this kind of activity as a problem and decided to stop it?

Sheesh and I was thinking that Nokia lacked proper advertising, this seems like some kind of sequel to the Da Vinci Code. (Not really mass marketing advertising, only for the brilliant)

First impressions of the vids were: yay-meegoadvertising, weird, liars, (not shortest ads) unconclusive but a real whoa when high

Imma not break my head over this, I grant it to you all for all this decoding, and gotta love the klingon reference some pages ago!

Even is a N9 can be won, I bet there are Devs out there who can prove themselves more worhy as earliest adapters. Better get power kernel ready for when I get mine sometime in december

Sooooo... either 1) They're overly paranoid and hilariously afraid someone will lift and use their open-source drivers and software on their own cheapy chinese-made clones (omnomnomnom! hehe)... or 2) they're continuing to intentionally purchase open-source unfriendly architectures and continuing to make contracts for said hardware despite the fact that the big selling feature of the Maemo/MeeGo line IS the openness.

In the former case, they're just being hilarious and I can only shake my head and they should feel shame. In the latter case, I hope Nokia falls flat on its face for BOTH that and the move to Windows Phone 7 and Eflop & Co. can eat dirty tire-marked underwear for all I care. heh

Paranoid about drivers for hardware that everyone is using? Intentionally purchase open-source unfriendly architectures?

Sooooo... either 1) You're totally clueless... or 2) You've been trolling tmo for over two years... or 3) Both.

And please enlighten us where Nokia's going to buy SOCs with competitive, open source mobile GPUs. I'm sure they'd like to know.

Wasn't the ST Ericsson U8500 tossed around as a rumor?
