Yes, because although Nokia has a warehouse full of these devices, they prefer to hand one away for free to a developer than selling 10 to 10 consumers, one of them who also happens to be a developer.

Like i said earlier, i'll believe it when Nokia officially announce something.. the phone i saw that guy using looked like the finished article to me and the icons were exactly the same.

I don't see any reason for Nokia to release a keyboardless device.. how will the average consumer distinguish it from an N8?

And if Nokia engineers are viewing this thread they will see they would be making a huge mistake by the general feedback..

yes, then he was using the dev device, which is also more likely (because it's only some days before release) than if he would have been using the consumer device (which is "far" (in terms of weeks) away from release).

How they will distinguish the (let's call it) N9 from an E7? It's the software and the size. The consumer device does have a larger screen than the N8

Sadly we're not the target group of the consumer-device... They made the dev-device for us.

How do they differentiate between N8, C7 and C6-01?

OK, so since they run the same software, that means a "developer" device is one with a keyboard, and maybe a larger screen, i don't know, and a "consumer" device is keyboardless... That's maybe because developers usually have much more friends than the average consumer, and sends more sms and e-mails to everyone. Oh, wait, no, that's because developers type their programs in the device itself!!...

What else, the developer device has a better or a worse camera? Is E7 the "developer's" N8?

No, the device with the keyboard has inferior hardware. And if an app runs on inferior hardware it runs on the better hardware even better (duh!).
I'm really sorry that you're disappointed at the moment even if it wasn't my decicion...
Hope you'll still like the device when you'll get your hands on it.

@ zehjotkah

you mentioned the 720p screen - is that only for the dev device, or for the consumer device too?

I don't know that much about the consumer device. Let's ask the guy who does have it..
But thinking logical I can't imagine the consumer device to have a lesser screen than the dev-device.

cheers, that brings me back to the number of mali 400 gpu cores in the u8500 SoC, for while a super-high res screen is lovely it needs significant grunt to drive it.........
