thanks.
If you have a google IM account setup, then use the built in client to start a conversation with the number in the format I gave.

I don't think the number you get is unique to you but rather unique to you and the party you are chatting with.

I don't see how google will be able to give everyone a unique number /permanently/ for sms from regular mobile providers. Are there enough phone numbers for that?

And I don't want yet another phone number to deal with. I think if you have a Grand Central number you ought to be able to use that. I also don't see how Google plans to monetize GC or this sms thing, unless they plan on changing that announcement you get when calling so that some company gets to advertise

It's actually more restricted than that, all the numbers are from one area code.

ok, it looks like google does give you a number for sms with the 406 area code ( montana, I guess has lots of free number )

I still wonder though if there are more gmail users who will use this feature than available numbers. pretty crazy situation. Maybe this will lead to some changes in the silly sms market

reading more, I see that you will have a unique number to a specific persones phone number but if you send sms to someone else it may originate from a different 406 number for that person to reply to but each person can permanently reply to the number that you appeared to originate from and it will get to you.

So if I am Bob and I send sms from google to Suzy it will appear to be from 406111222 and sms from google to Ann will appear to be from 406333444.

Suzy can reply to 4061112222 and it will get to me but Suzy cannot send sms from her phone number to 4063334444 and have it reach me.

well, maybe not. That is how I interpreted it, but I sent messages from gmail chat to several different phones and all came from same number. Pretty cool, I hope gmail is giving me a free permanent sms number, I'll take it
