From a manufacturing perspective it should be easier to manufacture and require less work (ie: not having to drill a hole in the material), thus making it cheaper.
Can I get one without camera hole and with purple velvet.
(Need some "Twin Peaks" feel to it!)

I've got an ancient Casio calculator, and kind of like the hard cover that protects the front of it when closed. Here's a picture of one:
