As you have probably noticed you can download handbrake profile from maemo.org wiki
http://wiki.maemo.org/Video_encoding#Handbrake

Also in same article there is some info about codecs:
http://wiki.maemo.org/Video_encoding...on_Codec_Usage

I´m not sure what problem is it but if I were you and told that it´s codec problem then at least I would have told in first message that WHAT codec i´m using, WHAT profile I´m using, WHAT bitrate i´m using on specific video that has problems. Answer to those question can be found with google. Also please remember that video files usually contain two media files that are encoded with different codecs: Video and Audio.

Very nice article. Great read! Hopefully this work will get packaged or more common knowledge in the future.

Slender, I'll concede that you have a point, but will add that, obviously the codec and bitrate I'm using isn't working. All I wanted to know was what others where using with success. Seems like a simple enough request to me.

Edit: Also thank you for the link to the Handbrake profile.
Edit #2: I was using a a wmv codec and a 720x480 resolution.

2disbetter,
Hmmm. If you can see video or hear audio then it's working. Totally different thing is that is it working GOOD or BAD. But the main thing is that to say something is working is just boolean logic. Yes or No. After that we can have discussion that is it working bearably or as it should.

So in first message you said that your mysterious video file (on which we stil do not know on what codec it has been encoded, video+audio and what bitrate it uses for video and audio and moreover are you using n900 default media player?) chokes your n900. So basically it´s working but not fluently.

.edit
btw. here is some experiments on how good quality stuff you can put on n900 and it still plays them:

As can be seen here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Media_Video
wmv is not codec but more like container for video and audio or actually looks like it´s encapsulated ASF container. Things get sometimes really weird with video so get used to it. First I would think that using microsoft container is regarded not so good idea with linux device

If you read this page:
http://maemo.nokia.com/n900/tips/video-files/

It mentions following:
* Resolution: 800x480 pixels
* Container: AVI or MP4
* Video codec: MPEG-4 or H.264, max. bitrate 5000 Kbps
* Audio codec: MP3 or AAC, max. bitrate 320 Kbps

Someone should fix that profile like the comment below says.
I just tried with the profile, to notice the transcoded video could not be played in N900. After the mod, it then did perfectly.
NB for more recent builds of Handbrake you must disable "Weighted P-frames" or the output will be Main Profile.

Please notice handbrake version for which it is done! Naturally if you use newer version things might brake.

N900 has hardware decoding support for MPEG-4 and H.264, use one of those. Oh, and the hardware decoding doesn't work in mplayer, only gstreamer-based applications such as Nokia's default media player.

I read months ago there is going to be hardware accelerated Theora decoder gstreamer plugin, but I guess it hasn't come yet?

Also vorbis should get hardware acceleration in gstreamer for N900 (and later Meego devices)
