At the end of the 'Mephemeris' thread (http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...ad.php?t=19545) there has been discussion of how neat it would be to use an electronic compass and accelerometer in the context of an astronomy app.

So...what are the chances of ever getting a compass device as well?

Also, is this fancy stuff *only* for the N810, and not the N800?

What about this? Not sure what the dimensions are, but this will convert the N8x0 to a phone:

2ioan. Dimensions: 1.75x1.75x0.275". Is there anything that can't be done with a bucket of spark fun parts.

I did not look into a compass but with the one wire buss it is possible. With the n800 the software would be the same but I would need to have a power connection and a cover for it. If it works it would be able to be used with either tablet.

To develop it for the N800 I would need to have a lot of interest and support.

Thanks

I am not building a phone add-on but this is a great site. http://www.telit.com/index.php
They have some interesting parts. This module is too thick for the current metal case.

I also saw this type of product at the CES show last month. Some were even smaller than this with the sin card holder.

Thanks

Yes you would be able to control say a TV or audio system directly from the Tablet.

I am an IR expert and if the programming is done for the Tablet the IR will transmit as far as you would like it to, say 50 to 60 feet. I make some of the fastest transmitting and longest distance IR in the world. I also make IR transmitters that will even work in sun light.

The IR transmit and receive will be the easy part. It is mostly up to the community to make the control programs. The codes and learning of the IR is stored in the module. The IR portion is controlled with hex strings similar to sending and receiving to a serial com port.

Thanks
As described, assuming the IR is in a reasonable place on the device, I would be interested.

The IR emitter will be on the side so it points to the devices you want to control when the tablet is held in the portrait orientation with the camera at the top. Any IR transmitter software should be written to use this mode as well as the landscape orientation.

There would also be a emitter in the landscape mode so the keyboard can also be used. The is a easy feature.

With this part of the mod the tablet can be made into a very sophisticated home automation remote control but as I said the software is not my department.

Thanks

I recently added a rotory switch to the left side of the case. This is the type that spins and pushes in.

There are another 15 switches in the design but I have not figured how to install them for the N810. They are for another application for the same mod. I think I can give access to 4 of them on the N810tablet. They would be good for extra remote control hard keys

I would be interested in the mods you're talking about. Funnily enough I've often thought it would be nice to have a rotary switch on a corner of the device, for one handed holding+scrolling.
Im looking forward to seeing what you've come up with.

Pfftt. Remote control is for losers. Those keys are really for game controls.
