Use a BT hands-free kit.

Problem solved...? (Unless the N900 has oddities with them as well, which I wouldn't rule out given the history)

Do not know the solution for your issue. But there exists an alternative solution with the "FM carkit" app now that I think may bypass your issue. May be you can give that a try.

thanks for the help but fm carkit does not solve my issue ... the issue is that the volume output by the audio jack defaults to 88% for mplayer and 48% for phone calls ... thus i have to turn my car stereo up considerably when my N900 is connected to aux on car stereo and i make a phone call.
