the diablo frontend for myth worked well for me apart from..

Occasionally the desktop engine would crash on exit, leaving the on screen menus and keyboard wierd.
The hardware was not really up to playing anything above 400x240, which meant most recordings needed to be transcoded first.
Only the bare frontend was ported - no video or music (no real loss there though)
It was better than the web interface for scheduling though.

It was very exciting and getting 0.22 running would be great. I don't think Yani spent a massive amout of time porting it, more just a question of getting the pre-reqs installed.

There is some cool control apps for myth, notably for Android and for iPhone(cough splutter). Just a shame that no-one has written a decent one for Maemo

Yes, I wasn't very impressed with them either, but there are a few. Mythremoter at least worked, but the UI was quite unrefined, as I recall, and then there was the one universal remote program that allowed you to configure it for Myth as well....aaaaaand Google tells me it's name is Irreco. Looks like they have a version for the N900 as well:

http://irreco.garage.maemo.org/index.html#index

But anyway, a good remote program would of course be great to have as well, that's true.

And cgarvie: I totally started like that too, setting up Myth and then spending the next year not updating it and hoping it doesn't break For me personally, once I broke it a few times and restored the database successfully after that, it sort of became a non-issue. The update to 0.22 will actually break things, for real, so truly make sure you take a database backup. The database format has changed so I at least had to do some updating on it, there's instructions of course on the Myth pages (changes have to do with UTF8 encoding / MySQL).

Nice to see you have done 0.22 upgrade. I have two machines that will need updating. I'm waiting for SuSE 11.2 to come out in a couple of days and updating the whole shebang in one go... its got easier and easier over the years, but I'm expecting a lot of stuff to not quite be there, but then thats the fun bit :-)

My problem is, i really cant ever find a 3-4 day window when i dont need the myth Box recording stuff, and that im free to do it.

and really id much rather have a week just in case.

Ive always managed when ive had to, but it has always taken toooooo long, and never went smooth.

Last upgrade only happened as TV guide stopped working, and i had to upgrade myth to get TV guide back, and so i did, then i had to do sql and so it went on.

Im too much in the camp of it aint broke dont fix it.

But thanks for your words of encoragment

Cgarvie - What sort of build are you running?

I was running Knoppmyth for several years, and found that although an upgrade sounded daunting, it actually was very painless. when making the upgrade to 0.22, I switched across to Mythbuntu as my OS, and again the upgrade was really easy. Everything worked out of the box, and I was up and running in about 1 hour. Had to do it whilst the missus had a lie in to keep the WAF high though! She doesn't like me tinkering with it!!

The golden rule is to have seperate partitions for your OS and data. I have a 20GB os partition (equiv to c: on Windows) and 2 data partitions.
2 important things to back up are your home folders, and the database. then if you want to install a new OS only format the OS partition and, then once installed mount the other partitions the same as they were previously and restore the database, and you are up and running.

Running a specialised distro for Myth like Mythbuntu, or Mythdora takes a lot of pain from the build process, and if you have mainstream hardware like MCE remotes, and Hauppauge captue cards then it is a snap nowadays.

try it. I've been impressed with 0.22. if you get stuck PM me, and maybe open a thread in off-topic ad we'll see what we can do to help.

XBMC on the other hand is a very nice media center software for watching videos, listening to music, playing emulators etc. Sure, both are used for watching videos, but it's like comparing Windows Media Center to Windows Media Player. Different things.
As I see it, MythTV only adds the DVR functions. How would we use them on the N900? By the way, you can use XMBC with Myth or Media Center as the recording part via scripts. I love Windows Media Center, and would switch to Myth on my Linux partition were it simpler to setup. I could never get it to work for my hardware setup. I'm using an OEM Compaq Media Center PC with an Asus Falcon TV capture card.

Mythtv is very, very cool. I've been running it for years. XBMC is very nice too, I have an old Xbox with it, use it as a media center at the family summer place. Perfect little thing for its use, watching videos and playing old emulator games.
If XBMC had a DVR function, I'd prefer it to Media Center AND Myth.

Well, I thought I actually said this, but anyway, it's the frontend we'd need to have on the N900. Not the server. Frontend is used for scheduling and watching recordings and videos + all the other more or less nice Myth add-ons there are now . You still need a backend server with Myth, always. If you think Myth "only adds DVR functions" then you're either not very impressed with the software (totally possible) or might not be very familiar with it. For DVR purposes, I've seen no solution anywhere that adds functions comparable to Myth.

Look, I'm not dissing XBMC at all, and I love it's interface too (Myth 0.22 interface is very nice, though), but these software are different in what they do. Myth's DVR features are amazing and I'd be very surprised if XBMC or any other project could add some DVR features to bring them up to Myth's level. I don't think it's a matter of "adding DVR functions". Myth has been adding them for years, it'll take a lot of work for anything to match it.

Is this what you mean?

http://sourceforge.net/projects/xbmcmythtv/

Last updated in 2007, I don't think it's exactly a realistic myth frontend replacement. Please point me in the direction of a XBMC plugin/script, if you know of any, though. I'm not trying to be snarky either, I'm serious: this, the XBMC plugin, is a good point - if XBMC were able to provide a good frontend experience for Myth, it of course might be useable with it.

But I at least don't know of any good XBMC plugins now that'd provide proper frontend functions for Myth. Myth of course does UPNP too, but still, having a UPNP client that can watch its recordings is not the same as a full frontend.

Anyway, as pointed out, we've had a Mythtv frontend port for Diablo with issues, I think it's pretty realistic to hope that we might have a proper frontend for N900 / future Maemo devices.

On Myth, everything - even live TV - is streamed from the server. Using the DVR functions on the N900 will be as easy as they are from any other client. My usual Myth front-end box has much less local storage than the N900 - it has none, and boots across the network.

I'm nervously looking at an upgrade to 0.22, not because I've had any massive problems with previous upgrades but simply because - as opposed to any other application on a family home network - Myth quickly becomes 'mission critical'.
