Hum..concerning the Samba deb ...you'd be best off tracking down the creator and asking directly if you want to know exactly it's interaction.
Best suggestion.
As far as the n810 goes...yeah.. isn't it great?
and I don't believe there is such a thing as coming late to the n8x0 party.
We still have alot of people here...
Initially... new people come ask a few questions on the basics..
after that then they motor on and just quietly do their own thing ...
I think it's less a party and more of a social club nowadays...somewhat like these fellows...

You have to change some setting on Win7/8 to allow samba to connect to it. I have it working here with Win7 but can't remember what I did, try google.

You can also turn off DHCP on the router and manually setup internal static IPs on every machine connected to it, with no third-party software. The router automatically assigns these internal IPs each time a machine is powered up. If you manually assign the IPs then they will always be the same and you can easily connect to the FTP server with its known IP. Only works from inside your LAN though, since the internal IPs aren't routable over the internet.

Your router might also have the option to not assign specific IPs. Then you can setup a static IP on the FTP machine, tell the router to not assign that IP to other machines and let all other machines dynamically request IPs as they currently do.

Yeah...what auouymous said.
There is a specific setting you need to alter in win7 to utilize samba with the n810. It's been a while since I setup samba for me too and I can't remember. I do know on xp it wasn't so finicky .

@ jakfish...aaaahhh! I thought you were using the new Outlook.
you are using the really old Outlook.
yeargh!
I see your dilemma now.

What a can of worms. It was a problem from the start, trying to get into my router page. An hour of Comcast tech support was futile; I finally figured out myself--Comcast allows only the briefest of opportunity to rearrange router settings. It doesn't look as if Comcast supports even internal static addresses. I thought about "no ip" software, but the port forwarding thing is tricky with router access so difficult.

In the end, I went to ethernet rather than wifi for the Win8 machine, which stops the constant changing of the dynamic address. It'll change, but not twice a day as it did with wifi. So gftp remains a workaround.

As for Samba, I'm almost positive I've set up Window share to its most open. I can access it through a variety of Linuxes, just not the N810, and XP is shared without complaint.

Try this:

1: Disable SMB2 on the 7 box if you haven't already. It's buggy. And exploitable!

2: in the group policy editor (gpedit.msc) turn off the policy which enforces "Always sign communications"

Windows Settings/Local Policies/Security Options: Digitally sign server communication (Always) >Disabled.
It was found here https://social.technet.microsoft.com...samba-software which may have more info on the subject.

That link and the places I went to afterwards were very helpful. Mostly, those Win8.1 reg edits are to allow dumbed-down passwords, so nothing worked w/ regard to the N810.

But when I tried to access the Win share through my old HTC Shift X9500 (which can only run Hardy 8.04.1), Nautilus 2.2 prompted me for a password to get into the Windows share.

Since I have no password set up, I can't get in. But Hardy's Samba is more or less circa the N810, and so what I theorize is that N810 is being prompted for a password, and since File Manager states that Shared Folders can only be open, the access is shut down.

When I used Hardy to access the XP shared folder, I got in without password, without complaint.

So unless there's a reg edit in Win8.1 that disables any password completely, it would appear that old versions of Samba won't work.

Ubuntu 12.04. for example, gets into Win8.1 shared folder.

This old maemo thread appears to describe your problem, maybe it has a solution. http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=11836

Thanks for the link. I followed it, and others, and eventually got Wizard Mounter up and running. Still couldn't figure out the id/password, since I'm rarely prompted on other other machines, and if I am, anonymous/guest works.

Hardy 8.04 also keeps prompting me, and I can't get that to use Windows share, either. So it appears to be an old Samba software problem.

I've searched everywhere, but I have yet to find a single case of an N810 communicating with Win8 shares.

Did you install the cifs kernel module from that thread? There is also a cifs module for diablo turbo if you use that.

You could then mount the windows share via command line. If that works, you could use something like ASUI to make a button that runs the mount/umount script. Then use file manager to view the mounted folder.

I am using the Diablo Turbo kernel, but when I put the cifs.ko in the /lib/modules directory and insmod it, I get an "Unknown symbol in module (-1): No such file or directory." which, I think, is evidence that the module is still in debug mode.

Are you running the DT kernel? Do you get the same error?

I'm getting everything from here:
