I figured a free GPS turn by turn navigation solution powered by the community would fit right in here.

Especially since OVI Maps has been a disappointment and Sygic is, well, you know the story...

But if it isnt possible or way too difficult to bother that is another issue.

Surely it would make more sense to integrate this into a protocol and allow other applications to provide the dataflow? If that could be done then all sorts of other applications could jump on board and hence the data feeds would improve. Maybe a suggestion to the service provider?

We already have. It's called Navit with the maps from Openstreetmap.

Navit still seems to be far from being stable and usable.
Also never hurts to have choices.
Although, it seems that Waze has more features (eg traffic updates in real time or adding POIs from within application) and that it would be easier to create maps on Waze vs Openstreetmap

if someone is intersted, im familiar with C/C++ and linux, but never dev something on maemo (I mean a real thing...), we can do some work and port it to maemo

plz let me know.
