Thanks, baeksu,

You got me on the right track and I seem to have it figured out. I really appreciate it.

Once openvpn is installed, you can create your own icons that call it...for example I have an icon that runs '/etc/init.d/openvpn start' and another one to stop it: '/etc/init.d/openvpn stop'.

To make an icon, copy one of the existing ones...they're in /usr/share/applications/hildon

How do you specify the config file using this method? A big pain for me is having to go into xterm and root before running my vpn. (Using the Minty Fresh setup)

For those stumbling across this thread late, there is now an applet to enable connecting (openvpn-applet I think).

Seemed to work fine.. hell it even pulled in our cisco pc config file
that we have our embedded key in.

Works like a charm.

I tried out the vpn applet, and it's quite buggy - you can't delete old configs, the new/edit/import window import and cancel buttons don't work reliably, and if there's an path to a file it doesn't like (even if valid) it complains.

Anyway, I finally managed to create a config file it didn't hate, putting the config, keys and crts in MyDocs/openvpn, and did the import. I got it to attempt to connect and it failed, and the whole hildon GUI locked up.

Rebooted and the vpn applet won't start at all. I guess I need to wipe its config and start again. Hopefully with a clean start it'd work. I know the config does work as I've done it from the command line OK.

Which version of openvpn-applet did you install? 0.3.5-1 is the version which you should be using and that version is also the newest version available from extras repository.

If you could post the problematic configuration file, I can fix the applet.

sorry for delay, have been snowed under with work and organising my vacation

I deleted everything out of /etc/openvpn, and removed the "status" and "log" lines from the config files which I'd put in /home/user/openvpn, and then it worked just fine. The keys, status and log lines had specified absolute paths to the certificates and files (to /etc/openvpn/blah) and that's what upset the gui client. By removing the directory paths it fixed it.

Seems to be quite stable now, thanks.
