My mates brother's mate says he can play GTA on it at the same time as listening to music, and surfing the internet, and his ps3 pad works with it, so clearly it can be done, developers are just lazy

no high-end consumerhardware-computer is even capable of emulating ps3.

ask again in 5 years.

Don't be so quick, I see where he is coming from, obviously an X86 box would have trouble emulating a PS3 because the PS3 doesn't have an X86 CPU... but here comes the shocker.. neither does the N900. It's not X86 either, should be a piece of cake.

False.

You're basically correct but not really.

Let's take a look at the gaming industry for example. Take any game availible on PS3, Xbox 360, and PC. Now assuming the PC is somewhat rigged for gaming ($500 vid card, competent multicore CPU, and at least 4+ gigs of RAM) the order of graphics ability from worst to best will be:

Xbox360, PS3, and finally PC. Some of you console fan boys are screaming it can't be. The ad's said the graphics were the best on my _________ (insert console here), but your wrong.

PCs have consistently (and will continue) to have the best graphics for one simple reason, a computer which cost 2-3 grand will always be superior to a $600-200 console.

The REAL reason why PS3 emulation is so difficult today is not becuase the computers aren't powerful enough for it, but more along the lines of software.

That is to say a console is a streamlined piece of hardware designed to do one thing, and does this often uniquley from other consoles designed to do the same thing.

For a PS3 to run a game, there isn't any translation, or filters required. It sees the data and runs with it.

However this same data is not understood on a system other than a PS3. This is where emulation comes into play.

Let's not forget too, that the PS3 architecture is very unique. This complicates matters more. And finally their isn't an OS (a robust one at least, think of dos with consoles instead of a full gui based OS)running in the background. There isn't a stack of processes running in the background while you're playing a game on console.(Besides control interrupts, network processes, and perhaps a few switch based things, but still nothign compared to modern day OS's)

Now while people can rave about how amazing the cell processor is, the facts are there, the PS3 can't outshine a PC.

Simple case in point, take Crysis on a cranked up machine running at 1920 x 1200, full everything. Now take Modern Warfare 2, and put it side by side. It will be clear which game looks better, and not by a minor difference either.

Another example is GTA4. I've played it on the PS3. There are subtle tricks used to help ease the graphics load in that version. Play it on a PC maxed out, and you once again will see the difference.

All that said, who cares? The PS3 does a good job at what it's supposed to do just like the Xbox, and for a much better price. Theren't aren't (usually) any technical problems either. So all that said, PS3 emulation is doable, it just hasn't been done yet.

Reasons behind it....

Developers are still wrapping there heads around the PS3 architecture.

If people who are paid and are actually given the privy SDK associated with the PS3 from Sony are still working it out, what makes you think some dude in his spare time is going to come up with the best methods for fast emulation on different hardware before they even wrapped their heads around writing optimized code for the system itself?

5 years is probably right. Not becuase of hardware restriction though. But because of software.

But on the n900, this is definate no. Hardware is the restriction there as well.

So...he wasn't FALSE then?

Scrap that, I see what you're saying. But he wasn't really false. It's still not going to happen.
