Lotta questions there

1st - the battery post hack is meant more as a stationary rather than travel...power surging stuff and all with car charging equip I believe.

2nd- there are a lot options for web...each have their plus and minus...greasemonkey ain't bad...iceweasel is good too.

3rd- the best options for powersaving are
a- set your illumination to 33ish (via ASUI)
b- disable audio (via ASUI) can't hear a thing though
c- disable BT and wifi (via ASUI)
d- set your customized battery settings also
e- disable the media player from doing refreshing via the ASUI (this cuts alot of waste)
f- use kilikali (music) and mplayer(video)... for a smaller footprint
there are more ...that just don't come to mind at the moment.
All this (but killing the audio ) should get you back up to 7 hours/ 10 days(standby) use ...As things stand...the fixes and conservation is worth updating to diablo turbo...since right now you are running with all the lights on...the microwave running. ..air-conditioner blasting....jacuzzi bubbling....the heat cranked up...and everything else too ...it's no wonder you are getting only 2 hours....ALSO...if you turn it on...leave it on...power on and off sucks at the battery every time by 2hour jolts...so better to leave it on.

4th-It's the fact that it is the file system types...windows does not play at all with linux partition types...ie ext2,3,4 ...linux can play with fat32 and ntfs...so it is allllll about the types in your windoze pc partition, the n8x0 machines partition and the sd card os partition....their ordering and how they interact....windows insists that fat or ntfs must be 1st in the order and there can only be 1 partition and will not recognize the others.Hence simply won't see it if connected via n8x0 sd card...it's there...just can't get at it.
Also win doesn't like the whole play nice with other partitions in the sandbox bully thingy ...So on the n800 (at least) your pc can recognize the on board n800 file systems because they have been set up to recognize and play well with windows...If you multiboot esp off an sd card you are not playing by windows rules so it won't play. It has nothing to do with nokia or linux or maemo....or some wizardry getting things to work...it's..just windows and the ugly methods that are truly inadequate today that you cope with.Think of it ...like this...An OS is like a house...the partitions (inside the house) are like rooms (in any given room there may be another possibly different OS or many...ie. multibooting....box within a box idea)...to get to the bathroom of a house you have to enter the house...go through rooms to get to the bathroom...windows interaction with the os on sd card doesn't understand the process...doesn't get that there can be more than one room in the house...why it has to go "through" the house... why it can't just go straight to the bathroom...so you see it ALLLL "Depends" ...get it!?!?! "Depends" ? haheehe...oh my...well those who know of the adult diaper will get it...ahhh just when you think bodily function humour was dead eh? ...anyway back to topic....and conclusion...So...this ultimately is why linux works the way it does and windows works the way it does. How this relates directly to your n8x0 is that your device can play with both parties...you just gotta know the rules of the game they play. As an admonishment...I don't detest windows..I love xp tablet!...use it for alot of artwork on my convertible tablets when I have time 'tween carving...usually over the winter....but windows (sigh)...they could try to be more compat and less combat with linux...linux ultimately is the future...they won the desktop wars...pretty much the laptop wars... the smartphone wars... the same...hell....when nasa replaces it's systems with linux.....THAT says something. They need to work with...not compete..anyway...time to stop droning on.
The benefits of your system ON the sd card are multitudinous love the word...saves system wear and tear on device...increases space for more storage and programs...you can copy your os for safe keeping on or off you device....and with ext3 and ext4 types if your system boinks ...it simply reboots and repairs it...alllllll on it's lonesome....for myself ...lately I simply have a 16gb card internally for the os and programs I want to have...my easily removable external storage I pack with the compleat works of shakespeare by the bbc actors guild (video)....the prisoner...etc..ALLL my fav movies...music ...Audio books, plays and Old time radio, and on another I have ALLLLL my books....not sure how many way...way up there...in the hundred thousands....from my faves on sacred geometry, gnosticism and hermetic studies to the finest in ranxerox ... ... From my perspective it is worth it.

Hello,

Thank you very much for the ultracomprehensive reply. I was just wondering how the flash system is presenting the cards via usb (it unmounts them as soon as the cable is plugged in). Now I see that I haven't had a slightest idea how it works.

To get it short: booting off sd excludes it and to get to the cards (or would it be only external one?) via usb, one has to boot off flash. Still the external card can be formatted in fat, right?

I'm quite used to linux and windows interaction, but in all cases the gentoo machine was the host I mounted all the shares on. I have never tried it the other way around.

Best,
nasve

O mymymymymy ....yes the method of cloning the OS indeed results in having a fat32 partition on it but that is only one of the partitions on the cloned card .
As far as the internal OR external goes it is smart to make sure that it is fresh to start with by formatting it on device...(failing that using the panasonic sd format tool software ....easily found on the web)...use the file manager... highlight the external card and the dropdown menu at the top should then offer the option to format....can't remem...don't think it's in fat32...I think it is ntfs...don't quote me on that one...just got up...it's 6 in the morning and I haven't finished my 1st cup of coffee yet So I'm notttt quiteeee at my shiningest brightest moment just yet

When hooked up to your pc normally with no partitioned fancy cards...Win. will see 2 very normal cards your internal and external.

Partition and "OS-ify" () your internal and when hooked up to your pc normally you will still see your internal and external....but you will only see on the internal what Win. is "able" to see (that fat32 partition I mentioned).

Boot up your internal copied OS AND hook it up to your pc and you bypass the onboard system and Windows has a hard time again with the linux partitions on the internal card but again has no prob with the normal formatted external card.

Unless you want multiple O.S.'s on multiple cards....my best suggestion is to put all your O.S's on the internal card and use whatever space left over for linux based storage (or whatever for that matter)...and use the external for windows accessible based storage (and if an (n800) alternate internal linux os (you have put on your card) or external linux pc can see the external card it is a bonus)....ALSO it is easier to pull the sd card out WHILE in use on the external and just pop 'er in your pc and tranfer files that way rather than on the n800. I never suggest pulling the internal out when you have mucked about with partitioning and multibooting and such on it...unless you clean off the ENTIRE device first....goodness knows what catastrophe and demons may issue forth

Oh yes....hmmm ...Can't remem. if I mentioned when cloning...keep it simple....just have the internal card in...not both....saves confusion and conflicts when cloning.

There we goeth...
Betty's yer Aunt and Bob's yer Uncle. Done...
unless more questions...I need to slurp some coffee at the moment.

Good... you got it ....You will probably mess with it a few times until you get it the way you want it....it isn't that people's explanations on how to do it are lacking....it's the method the programs to clone are set up for compat. ...ease of use and simplest methods of achieving the desired goal...when creating such programs... specifics must be applied....hence explanations no matter how detailed do not compare to the subjective experience of the user.... ie. the instructions and advice I and others have given may seem obtuse right now...but when you are doing the process there is a simple 1-2-3 logic to it all...if you encounter errors or problems...simply stop ...exit... power down...reflash the firmware and start over...takes a heartbeat. I'm sure you will do it a few times until the last "AH-HA!" revelation hits (you'll have a few along the way) esp. if you think in windows and linux and now maemo-linux .This is why I suggest having all the necessary packages downloaded (pre cloning and diablo-turbo updating stuff and including web links to specific pages)....on your external sd card...that way...if (rather when ) you must reflash...you can easily access/ transfer whatever you need as needed without having to painstakingly go through the whole ugly downloading processes over and over and over.

When you finally knuckle down to do it...on your pc have multiple windows open with all the pages for installing whatever immediately to hand...so you can easily reference (CSSU page...ASUI page in garage...diablo-turbo installation page in talk and the page in garage...pb console tool v1 install procedure page in talk and the newbie faq linked page in bold type there...etc..) everything in it's order...THAT is a big big help when doing all this the 1st time. After the n-teenth time doing it all it'll be old hat to you and you'll be thinking gadzooks!...that really was pretty easy (though at the time it may as well seem like trying to climb Kilimanjaro with eyes closed, backwards, and upside down ) and you'll be going from reflashing to full diablo-turbo and multibooting in under an hour...

Also...if I haven't mentioned it before...and I think I haven't...concerning sd cards...for your external storage get 32gb class 4....may seem like under-kill ...but the 32gb will work and class 4 is a more stable class for various purposes related to the n8x0. Higher classes may or will give you hassles. Adata sd variant is a good model...cheap too....and there are others. For your internal...no less than 2gb. I will attach this to the massive 1st thread as well as pertinent card partition sizes related to sd card storage size. (which I don't believe I did initially).

Good day everybody

Just a short update: I have performed all steps till point #3 (everything went as described, the only variation was that I've decided to drop swap partition for now - I use virtualmem in the obligatory fat partition). After point #3 and before gronmayer, I've cloned my system to usb drive, just to have some convenient restoring point .

Right now I'm chewing through the repositories.

Many, many thanks for your valuable help EorM!!
