@railroadmaster: Yes indeed, the similarities are more than striking. Someone should have given the book "On the Edge - The Rise And Fall of Commodore" to the exec's at Nokia in time before they started to wander astray in the dark M$ land.

There are similarities for sure. Especially with the OS parallels. though I don't think it stops to commodore. There are a lot of similar cases out there. Xerox is probably the most famous one and still one of the most quoted case.

Thankfully compared to commodore Nokia has been once again able to come back, like it has in its 150 year history for 4 times now. Nokia's market value is back to around 25 billion euros (what they were worth in 2011) and most importantly, they are growing once again. As a brand of course, they are now a B2B company and wont have the kind of presence they once did.

As for Microsoft, they are doing amazingly at the moment. Better than ever actually. MS layoffs got nothing to do with their performance. It was about increasing their staff for 1/3 when they bought Nokia's mobile business and changes they did to their mobile/Nokia side that is experiencing heavy losses.
That said it just might be they are experiencing what Nokia did back in 2008. Time will tell, and while Nokia had a big bank, Microsoft has absurd amount of net capital when/if it really needs to transform to something else. Still having the means to do that change is more important than the bank you got.

Another similarity to Commodore is the acquisition process, when Commodore was being sold Commodore UK attempted to save the parent company and when Nokia D&S was being sold there was an attempt by former Nokia employees to save it and create Nokita. Another noteworthy similarity is that both companies attempted game consoles and failed.
It is true that there is a corporate entity with the name Nokia, this new Nokia is entirely different company then the one that made phones. Like wise there is still a corporate entity with the name Commodore but it is different than the one that made the C64 and Amigas.

Sorry, you are wrong there. Well I don't know about Commodore, but nothing like that took place with the selling of the devices division to MS.
This "Nokita thing" you are referring to was an internet joke, there never was anything like that in existence


Well yes, but that is because it never was that way. Many people still seem to equate Nokia=UE's, but that was just one part of the company and while it did generate considerable share of the revenue of the whole company during a time, it neither was the largest part by headcount or by number of filed patents.

What MS finally bought was a very impoverished and shriveled limb of the healthy mother company. No regrets there
