Sweet, I'm guessing that means you can also use the spotify client? Though I thought there was licensing issues that prevented that in the first place...

No, the Spotify client is for x86 Windows or Mac. Even under Linux, you're told to use spotify in wine. Hence... despotify!

But if you have a subscription, no one stops you from using despotify and the official spotify client at the same time

I just made a quick GTK GUI for despotify and made it compile in scratchbox. Works on my N810, although not too stable.
Get it here: http://unntaket.net/gspotify/

You need a premium account to use them though.

I'd heard of we7.com before - but discounted it (heard "free music" and thought "unknown").

However, it is - basically - a Flash-based version of Spotify, with a broad selection of well known music, which works in the browser...

...including MicroB! (and presumably Tear too)

Hi. I installed libdespotify-0.0.300_armel.deb and gspotify-0.0.12_armel.deb but libvorbisfile.so.3 and libncursesw.so.5 were missing after installation.

libvorbisfile.so.3 I got by creating symlink to /usr/lib/libvorbis.so.0.4.0
libncursesw.so.5 I took from raitv_0.15.tar.gz (see: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=27051)

So now I am able to run gspotify. Splash screen appears and I can provide my login and pass. But then it freezes. It says it's loading, but nothing more happens.

My device is N810 and it runs Maemo 5.2008.43-7

Could anyone help me to run gspotify. Thanks.

Yes, I am also interested to see a working solution to Spotify, sad that just using Wine and Despotify does not seem to work.
want to trade my 1st generation "jack of all trades" N95 with maybe a N900, and Spotify preferably a free version would be a killer.

despotify works fine in maemo 5 sdk atleast, so it should work on N900

Here are some screenshots:

gSpotify:

gSpotify is not very stable though. Needs some work before it's useable.

I installed these:
apt-get install libssl-dev zlib1g-dev libvorbis-dev libtool
apt-get install libpulse-dev # For pulseaudio backend
apt-get install libgstreamer-plugins-base0.10-0 libgstreamer0.10-dev # For GStreamer backend
apt-get install libao-dev # For libao backend

and compiled despotify before i compiled gSpotify. don't know if it's the same on N810.
despotify is here: http://despotify.se
