I'd so much prefer an HDMI out... although this isn't probably as easy to do.

Just to clarify, I started this topic as a plea for a TV Out feature on future models rather than on existing models. Nokia seem to have at least a couple more tablets in the pipeline so this is possibly the best time and place to beg for stuff like this... ;-)

As far as I know TV Out requires a special graphics chip, at least that's how things are on Nokia's smartphones. But the graphics chip they use on the smartphones also has the added bonus of 3D graphics acceleration.

Well, the way I'd look at it, you're far more likely to run into non-HDMI TV sets when you're on the move, one of the places you might use TV Out is in a hotel room or if you're staying at someone else's house. And like you say it might complicate matters. Any TV output is better than none.

Providing the TV out to connector would be the easy part.

The TI OMAP2420 on the N800 has TV Out support. Whether Nokia has it wired to the audio/mic port is another thing. That would be an Easter egg

I said that OMAP had TV out a few posts ago. The point is that connecting it up is not that hard and Nokia should do it.

I'd prefer a micro-dvi-out over a video out. For one, we still have different video formats in different countries, making for more complexity to serve all of Nokia's markets equally. DVI, on the other hand, is standard across all countries, isn't it?

Apple has already shown that you can have micro-dvi-out to lesser-format adaptors, including video. So, why not go with that?

[adding as an after-thought] On the other-hand, if the N800 can already do video out, and it has the ability to do both American and European display formats ... then yeah, having that capability enabled would be a very nice thing.

This is a standard part of the OMAP 2420 (i.e. the N800 has the hardware too), it's just that we lack drivers for it (FYI it's called the PowerVR MBX).

Why DVI? HDMI is kicking off. More and more Computer screens have it. Since HDMI display stuff is based on DVI and HDMI has sound support aswell I'd prefer it.

(so, I've been saying micro-dvi, but it's actually mini-dvi)

I wasn't aware until just now that there was a mini-hdmi, nor an hdmi-to-dvi adaptor. But I found both while doing a couple google searches just now.

So, yeah, I'd be fine with a mini-hdmi interface.

On the N800 case, you could keep the head phone jack where it is, and then add the mini-HDMI on the opposite side of the case from where the mini-USB is located (so, under the stand, but on the side where the camera is). That way the stand would protect it the same way the stand protects the mini-USB.

of course, if the "N900" has a slide out keyboard, then there's no telling where any of the connectors will be in the future.

I take that back. The HDMI interface has DVI adaptors, but they omit DVI-A support (analog), so you could NOT do mini-HDMI->DVI->Video

Whereas, with mini-DVI you could do:

mini-DVI->Video for a TV with analog input
mini-DVI->VGA for a VGA monitor
mini-DVI->DVI for a digital monitor or HDTV with DVI input
mini-DVI->DVI->HDMI for a digital montior or HDTV with HDMI input

if you put a mini-HDMI connector on it, then it sounds like you'll be limited only to the latter two of those choices. I don't think that's a good idea.
