I know there are also many other Skype and Pidgin related posts, but I'm not the one with the problem so I didn't do an exhaustive search.

Got any other examples of nobody having the same problems?

slow down technut... let's not have a cow. Actually the difference between this user and me for example is I figure out how and where things had moved. Yes they moved the location of the sources.list file in apt. Yes things are different.

NO! you don't need to act like a god and keep saying RTFM. Please refrain from such a comment with new users. It doesn't help. They are often coming from the windows world and don't know how things work.

However I guess if you are trying to show off without showing expertise, I guess chiming in on post after post with your equivalent of RTFM is ok.

Like I said. Want more examples of problems with installs. I've figured them out... can you? No wait. Read the posts. You can guess what problems I found.

It's a pet peeve of mine that new people drop into a forum and just ask their particular question without doing decent research. And then they start a NEW thread, no less, instead of chiming in on an existing one.

I'm plenty helpful, but not to people who won't help themselves.

Technut. I've been dealing with newbs in linux for the last 10 years. You need to guide. Point out the way things are done and move on. 99.99% of them will take the info and learn. Those who don't get culled. But the problems here are 99% related to the fact that the search on this site kinda sucks. I've found most of the info I need not by searching the site. But instead doing a google search using the site:internettablettalk.com switch.

So far I've found

omweather
unzip
zip
rdesktop
vncviewer

and others I can't remember that cannot install despite being in the 0S2008 repository because they depend on 0S2007 libs. There will be a lot of hand holding. Welcome to the club, breath deep and move on.

I suppose I could scream that it took the Webmaster 10 months to allow me to post, despite multiple requests until I hit it lucky one day. But hey.

As for your posts. I have that' s how I know you are getting a bit too hair triggered with the RTFM. I understand you do contribute. If you didn't, and your knowledge wasn't useful I wouldn't be trying to calm you down, asking you to take a fresh look at things.

First I would remove all your repos since they don't work for you anyway.

THEN go to http://gronmayer.com/it/ as mentioned.

Third click on ITOS2008 at the top.

Now,click "select all".

Next click on Install selected.

Try installing your programs MINUS the ones that are KNOWN not to work.

Let us know what happens.

Thank you for really trying to help me out on this instead of booing a newbie (and I did search all forums before posting this thread).
Well, I have done exactly as you suggest, and also made sure, that all repos now are for the chinook. But, unfortunately, problem unchanged. I try to install, download comes through, but then "Unable to install xxx". Have tried with about 10 programs. The only ones appearing in the "Installed programs" list are Map and osso-xterm.

A more detailed error message might help. Hit the Details button and put that information here.

I'm not sure why you chose to highlight Skype to begin with, since you say you were well aware that lots of people were having problems installing it. I can't install it either. So that shows what -- you can't install a program that everyone knows is broken?

You are going to that cool repository site and trying to start the installation process from there, right? That's good, if true.

If you are having this much trouble doing what everyone else is having minimal trouble doing -- I, for example, installed lots of programs after installing 2008 this evening -- perhaps reflashing would be in order. It's not as if you have installed zillions of programs and it would be a big hassle to reinstall them!

So I would reflash, then go to that cool repository site and go thru and start installing 2008 programs. And take careful notes of exactly what you do and exactly what the results are.

It's not like the God of Nokia is against you. There has to be a reason that you can't install any programs.

Now, you will run into programs that give you the message that you quoted. But not all the programs. Tonight I installed FBReader, Devicescape, Mauku, Pidgin, Pid, Disk Usage, Maemopad+, Nako, Vagalume, Knips, UKMP (Dark and Tube), LSDoom, TuxPuck, and Map. I didn't even try most of the games.

I then went on to try to install stuff from the 2007 repository, just out of curiosity, with no success.

Repositories do not restore from OS2007 to OS2008. At least when
I restored my OS2007 backup I didn't get my repositories back to Application manager. If repositories will restore from OS2007 to OS2008 then I think it is a bug in OS2008? Have you got your repositories from OS2007 to OS2008 by using backup/restore tool?

Sh*t, you shouldn't even do a restore.... Try to reflash without doing a restore. You can now export your contacts if you have any you would like to save. But, I see a lot of people have trouble with restoring a backup on their first flash with ITOS2008.
