I know, we are maybe asking too much for a device which is intended for our Internet experience, but I believe the NIT has potential to do more and fit many needs.

Reasonable Excel Docs can be handled by Gnumeric, a new Abiword port is in the works for OS2008 that will be able to handle word docs. Power point not to sure I don't think there is anything out there, there are plenty of online ppt to pdf converters that can be used in a pinch however.

That said we really do need good integrated office compatibility.

I think the "elephant" in the room (regarding D2G on the NIT) is that there is and has always been a dearth of retail (ie: non-free) software on *every* open source platform. I have no reason to believe it is going to be different for the IT/Maemo.

I can make some guesses as to why this is the case: lack of market share, (minor?) differences in target devices/os, perceived lack of interest in paying by consumer, and/or stupidity of software makers. I'm sure this has been argued thousands of times before regarding platforms much larger than IT/Maemo.

I am hoping that the IT ecosystem moves more towards the way Palm OS and Win CE/Mobile are (non-open platforms), with a relatively thriving retail software industry, but definitely Nokia needs to sell lots of units.

sidenotes:
1. If the kinks in the new Palm-VM get worked out, and hopefully get more integrated into Maemo, things will be *very* good. There are lots of great/useful apps for that platform.
2. I would love to see Java, Symbian and .NET runtimes ported to the IT, either working with Maemo, or even as a replacement. All choice is good, and all of the above would open up lots of applications.

FWIW, I too wrote off to DataViz requesting that they port Docs2Go to N8x0 platform. I've been a registered user on my Palm for several years and now that I'm upgrading to the Nokia I'd love to be able to keep this program (or at least some form of it)

Welcome to ITT! Heading over from Brighthand, eh? I'm also a registered D2G user and I also wrote to DataViz. Let's hope it works out.

Thanks TA-t3 Yup, I actually discovered the N810 while browsing Brighthand and was so excited about it that I've decided to finally leave Palm after 5+ years (well kinda, I still plan on using GVM )

Anyways, I've got the N810 for Xmas. It's sitting there wrapped, under the tree driving me crazy because I'm not allowed to touch it until Xmas morning I can't wait!! So in the mean time I've decided to start reading up on the new system - I'm one of those freaky people who always reads instruction manuals
