Yeah, well, I had to add a full stop. If you don't post things twice how will people know they are important?

How about with the great new addition of the "Thanked" button we could add a "Smacks" (smack in the face) a "No Thanks", or a "NEWB SEARCH FIRST, IDIOT" button ?

Seriously -
Is there not a way they could code the software to require peeps to do a search prior to posting?

I understand your frustrations.

But I don't think this is in the spirit of the ITT.

There are a great many n00b unfriendly Linux communities out there whose reference answers to any n00b help not only involve saying "use the search button" and "read the FAQ" but aso include various denegrating comments that just leave n00bs feeling afraid to ask for fear of attack by a community whose aims ought to be support.

Like it or not we're front line help for most of these people.

Instead of a smack button I'd prefer a "refer you to the FAQ/Wiki" button. Selecting this button has the effect of opening up an editable wiki page for the selectee and automagically referring the poster to said page. I reckon that's the best way to go about both updating the wiki and informing users out there of its existence. An updated wiki will eventually become the first port of call for these people.

The wiki page ought to have a "thankyou" button that deems whether or not the article was useful, with karma going to the editor.

Just my two pence.

I agree with you yabbas, you've outlined a much nicer way of handling it, my post was to be taken with a grain of salt, I think.
