I'm having a very similar problem, I have an SD card that does work, a 2gig SD. I have tried 3 other sd cards, a 1 gig SD, a 2 gig SD, and an 8gig SDHC. All three of those cards cause weird problems. It doesn't read any if them, anything that tries to read from it crashes. df hangs, du hangs, ls shows /media/mmc1 as empty. There are devices for it but it looks like it can't read it. sfdisk -l also hangs. And in order to fix any of it I have to hard shutdown by removing the battery because none of the hardware buttons work, not even the power button. Anyone have any idea what might be wrong?

I'm having a problem with the external card rather than the internal one.

I tried pushing it in hard but it didn't make a difference.

I know it doesn't seem to make sense but i'm putting it down to an incompatability between the microSDHC and the miniSD adaptor.

What do you think ??
I have a similar problem with a Sandisk 8gb microSDHC card. A friend got it from Amazon while in the States along with a N810. The card arrived with a full-sized SD extender. I purchased a microSD-to-miniSD adapter here in Bangkok. The 810 doesn't see the card w/adapter. Inserting it in as far as it would go was no help. The adapter I ordered from Hong Kong was also no help. This adapter was different than the first in that, the card inserts into the side of adapter. On two occasions, the 810 hung during power-up with the card combo installed as far as it would go. Had to remove the battery to get back to normal.

While waiting to get a microSD-to-miniSD adapter, I formatted the card in a card reader with one partition to a ext2 filesystem. This was done on my Mandriva 2008.1 Linux system.

Am open to any suggestions to solve this riddle. Oh, Penguinbait's install-tools is install on the internal 2gb card.

Despite some claims here to the contrary I would strongly suspect not all micro to mini adapters work with SDHC.
Of Sandisk, Kingston, A-Data, and Trascend at Newegg only the Kingston offers a micro to mini converter.
Please correct me before I buy an 8GB Sandisk micro SDHC for my N810.

I got a miniSD patriot 8G. It came with SD adapter, works for both N800 and N810, so far........ and for the N810, no, you do not use any adapter at all . Got it from newegg.com, $34.02 shipped. You will not find it from Newegg.com website, I think they are a little shy about this particular product , you have to use my link, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820220295.

This talks about the product, if you would like to know more, http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...ad.php?t=20428

BTW, the website said s/h $5.99, if you use USPS, it is $2.03, that makes $31.99+$2.03 a $34.02 shipped, you save $3.97. Thank you, bun

Hope this help,

bun

Well I found this on a Sandisk forum.
The adapter does not have to say miniSDHC, however the device that your using the card with would have to be miniSDHC. Which isn't very likely.
I'd take it for what it's worth. It's very likely to us here that our devices are miniSDHC.

I bought that exact San Disk Micro SDHC + Adapter on Sunday and it is working fine on my n810. So, it is compatible.

OUt of curiosity, try Penguinbait's clone .deb from www.penguinbait.com.

That tool will properly format the card.

If after several tries it does not work, I think you have a hardware problem.

Here's my writeup on that process:
