I get this when enabling the clock status bar applet and leaving it on an alarm iirc.

I would describe it as losing the persistence of several desktop settings (launcher panel and desktop applets.) I have not yet figured out if it correlates to any action in particular.

I think the problem started a few days ago when I updated a whole host of software, after enabling the "Temporary" repositories posted here back in December to fix a typographical error in one of the repositories. Updated software included Modest (probably NOT from the temp. repository), OpenSSH, and Maemo Mapper. XL1200c: have you recently updated or installed any of these?

Log file to search, anyone? TIA.
I've been hoping someone would start this thread. I have exactly the same symptoms. One addition I don't think I saw noted... rebooting brings my custom settings back to normal ... until the next burp that takes it back to default.

I recently installed Maemo Mapper and made the "repostory" typo fix. Have never installed Modest. I use OMWeather and recently upgraded it. Haven't touched OpenSSH in a month and this symptom started less than a week ago. Other than that, the only update I've made in the past week or so is Canola, but it was happening before I did that.

I'm going to some troubleshooting to help this weekend, beginning with uninstalling Maemo Mapper. Then I'll disable OMWeather if that doesn't clear it up.

I'll post any noteworthy findings. Thanks for starting this thread!

As I've said before (and will say again) it was not a typo. At the time, pretty much anything was setup to direct to stage.maemo.org (the maemo staging repository), up to and including nokiacangodieinariver.maemo.org.

That info is 4 months out of date and no longer relevant. You want repository.maemo.org.

Desktop crashes can be caused by a variety of things. Generally it's third party applets (desktop, statusbar, or taskbar) crashing that bring down the Desktop, but there are a few other cases unrelated to this that can cause it (most notably waking a Bluetooth keyboard from sleep, which causes it about 10% of the time). To prevent crashing loops, the Desktop restarts with everything reset to default.

I filled bug #2614 on the issue, but got shot down. I'm still of the opinion that this behavior is broken and incredibly burdensome on the user (especially considering how unstable the Desktop really is in realworld usage). If they can't manage to make it just a little stable (c'mon, Bluetooth keyboards causing crashes ), then they really need to give us a faster recovery mechanism (I'm a fan of a "Restore my settings..." menu option after a crash).

Problems here as well. Updated both personal menu and statusbar clock about 3 days ago. Starting yesterday my desktop seemed to 'reset' ... would see msg re: connection to wiireless network and the accompanying sound which is what made me notice. This happens while n800 just sitting on nghtstand lookingg ppretty.. Both status/clock and personal menu disappeear, but omweather, the only desk applet I use, seems unaffected. This has happeened twice last night and twice this morning. Fixes itself on reboot.. Can't really contrib much else other then confirm "that boy ain't right"

Perhaps worth noting that this started shortly after installing modest which I set to auto retrieve. I just turrned off auto retrieve which wasn't working anyway. Can't imagine this is even relevant given the frequenccy of modest's checking, and that resets only happened few times Good news is finally fixed it so modest nno longer bugs me about certs when loading.

EDIT = Just happened again, so modest is no longer suspect and prolly never deserved to be. Was running off battery this time, always pluugged in before..

There is a destinct possibility that either statusbar clock or personal menu (more likely personal menu) has a problem that is crashing the desktop. But them disappearing do not mean they are causing it.

When the desktop crashes, the tablet reloads a 'safe'set of statusbar and task navigtor plugins and disables all home applets. The statusbar applets and task navigator loads are controlled by a library set in the ~/.osso/hildon-desktop/desktop.conf file referred to by X-UI-Policy.

I have been experiencing this as well (and thought it was modest related) so I will look into personal menu.

Out of curiosity, did anyone notice this with earlier versions of personal meni?

Not personal menu, but command navigator did this twice. However, it didn't effect status/clock or anything else. Trying now with clock off and personal menu on too see what happens.

well my desktop crashed today as well but i was surfing only and it gave me an error that said out of memory. Background became white and the taskbar theme looked wierd. otherwise it felt fine. One other thing is that when i did a manual reboot personal menu became contacts again. not a big deal though.

Btw, great job... made the tablet a whole new device for me.

sai

update: just reset itself again doing nothing but on standby, both personal menu and status bar clock dissappeared.

12 hours after uninstalling Maemo Mapper, I have no crashes.

How could an app that's installed, but not running cause trouble? It makes more sense that it would be related to a running applet.

Not done yet ...

Correlation != causation. If Maemo Mapper isn't open, then there's no way that it could cause desktop crashes.

With Large statusbar clock with alarm caused my N810 desktop reset. I tried it twice and reset happened when alarm was on. I uninstalled large statusbar clock and resets stopped. Personal menu has not caused any resets, yet.
