I did some hiking last weekend (Thursday was a holliday here in Germany;-) and made some experiences with my N810. Using Slamp's and MarkW's instructions here from the forum I was able to scan my 1:25000 map an to put it into meaemo mapper's repository. Took me less than an hour, not too bad for the first try. Maybe I manage to get maps from CDs in an similar way.
During the walk it was great to have the map handy on the display. I got it up to zoom level 5 which is an enlarged view from the original map, much better to read, even in direct sunlight;-) The battery lasted the whole day.
The recorded Track is somehow jagged due to errors in the GPS position. The recorded distance is at least 10% to 20% more than real. It would be great to have some filtering to get the real track length.
I use google earth to load and display the track and then follow it with the ruler to get the real track length. Until now I don't have a tool that makes such automatically and prints the height profile, too. Any suggestion for this?
My Conclusion: N810 and maemo mapper are a great team for outdoor activities with some potential for further improvements.
I have been walking in Naples yesterday afternoon (dribbling among the 'munnezza' ) and it recorded all tje path (Maemo Mapper) even in the very narrow roads in the historical center...
