https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2494

Most (all?) stock application are broken though: they won't respect the DISPLAY setting and show always on the tablet screen.

osso-xterm worked but sapwood theming engine messed it up and osso-xterm looked "weird" on my desktop.

That's because of the whole maemo-launcher thing. I built a standard hildon-desktop executable and used that to make those screenshots. Of course, this does not seem like a good solution since it requires rebuilding each application you plan to use.

I was not able to get any of the built-in apps to display on anything other than display 0, that is, the tablet's built in screen.

The other way is lots of fun, though. I even got Microsoft Word, running under Ubuntu Wine, to X-forward to my tablet...

Maemo runs Microsoft Word!!!!!!!

You can also use Qtnx. This enables X compression; good for bandwidth (ssh -XC does enable some compression too). The poor ARM CPU might not like the additional load tho. So try. Anyway, with Qtnx you run an application (or whole desktop) on Linux computer. This computer must run a NX server though (open source FreeNX or proprietary NXserver). This protocol supports resuming, CUPS, SMB, font server, sound server. Other option is xrdp; a RDP server for Linux which locally translates to VNC and X. Then RDP client (e.g. rdesktop) on Maemo.

You should also install the package in comment #12 (libxmuu1), I don't remember if you can install it via the application manager or you have to download it beforehand and install it in the terminal with dpkg.
