It works great here; I think it's an improvement in appearance. (As one would expect; if, as a font author, your own hinting doesn't look good as libfreetype's autohinting algorithm, I'd hope you'd use that instead!)
I'm not sure regarding performance; while I've no knowledge of the internals, I'd expect that auto-hinting analysis and bytecode reading probably occur once on loading a font, and the results of either are cached, so there's probably no performance difference at all long-term.
