sleep 5
xmodmap -e "pointer = 1 2 3"
That sets it to do a middle click when you single click for the next 5 seconds, then sets it back. You can get right-click the same way, but change the first mapping to 3 2 1.

On consideration, you undoubtedly have xmodmap on the server, so you might run it there.
Oh great idea. That is what I love about Linux: it seems like there is always a solution to be cobbled together.

Now, unless I am missing how you would activate this (like from inside a VNC viewer full-screen mode)? Since I have an N810 with a physical keyboard, can I map a key like the "Chr" shift key to run this code and therefore get a middle-click mode for 5 seconds at a time?

MPC+MPD might cut it.

Also, mounting a share over CIFS/SMB, NFS, SSH(FS) and so on might cut it too.

josiahg777,

thanks .

wartstew,

you've missed the point completely . i can run X and X apps on mac freely. and use tunnels, and so on. the point, however, is that i don't want to look at these ugly interfaces anymore. and don't want to constantly patch something or code plugins/addons/etc. i just want to do what i want to do. and i want software that just works out of the box.

Sorry for the misunderstanding. I doubt there will be a solution that will meet your requirements until Apple decidee to come out with some nice polished software product (for the iPhone/iTouch only, I'm assuming) that is designed specifically to interact with your Mac in the user friendly manor you desire. Maybe they already have?

I bought my NIT knowing it was a hackers toy. While others gripe about things that don't work quite right and/or too awkward to use, I marvel at all the things I have been able to do with it after [unfortunately] a little bit of work. That said, I keep getting reminded when pulling up program interfaces designed for a mouse that a mouse is NOT like a touch screen. There are lots of funny things I've never thought about until now.

I use http://anyremote.sourceforge.net as remote control software.

You can find my deb to run it on the tablet here:
anyremote in usb2vga thread

I control the tablet from my mobile phone, but there are other frontends as well on the website.
Perhaps it works for Mac users as well.

Good luck!

tty,

You can control VLC with Irreco remote controller and Irreco telnet-backend. Irreco is available at http://irreco.garage.maemo.org/ or from maemo-extras chinook repository.

After installing Irreco,
configure telnet device controller with details of your computer which runs VLC (host and port).

Start VLC in MacOSX from terminal in /Applications/VLC.app/Contents/MacOS/
for example with command: " VLC --extraintf rc --rchost :4443 " where 4443 is the port you want VLC to listen connections. Remember to open/forward that port if you are going to use it outside firewall/NAT.

Then create buttons in Irreco for commands you want to send to VLC, play, stop, pause etc. Instructions for using Irreco can be found from the Irreco website.

VLC telnet interface must be launched from commandline becouse adding that from GUI wont allow connections without password which Irreco telnet backend cant manage.
