i'm running diablo and i did everything in the wiki cept it doesn't work D: I don't see dummy wireless connection. using the smc 2208 usb 1.1 you rec'd too. If i install the patch from nokia (bug 3306 i think?) to have the permanent dummy, i can connect to it, but when i try going to any webpage i'll get an error that says i don't have an internet connection. Nothing's wrong with my host as i can connect a keyboard via usb and it works fine, and all the lights on the usb/ethernet dongle are lit up (10/100, F/H, and Active). If i run the usbEth script then the connection window doesn't pop up and i can't select any connection if even i run the wireless script and i have to reboot in order to use wireless again. D: any solutions?

Agreed. The wiki is for the 770 model and should really be updated.

Which Wiki Entry are you talking about that's targetted for the 770? The one regarding USB wired networking is written specifically for the N800/N810 and OS 2008:

(If you're talking about USB networking as in using USB to connect to a computer and route the network through that machine that's a different story).
As for the problems that bigr3dd0g is describing, not sure but I've got a new version of this package that I'm trying to get up into the maemo-extras repository that should work and make things uber easy. I'll update the wiki entry with details as soon as I get it sorted.

The Wiki has been updated for the latest version of the USB LAN package. Nokia did some fixing on their end to make Dummy work properly, so I've taken that into account and added a few little tweaks so that now you no longer have to manually select "WIRED" from the connection dialog box... literally you plug in your network adapter and it works... how sweet is that? ;-)

The Wiki entry can be found here:

I've been trying to get the package into the extras repo but that's more of a long term project now since it's not as easy as one would have hoped, so for now just follow the instructions on the Wiki page and manually install the .deb files.

And of course don't forget the new version of the OTG adapter that makes physically connecting your USB Ethernet adapter a lot easier and less cumbersome:

Thanks!

sigh. i uninstalled everything and followed the instructions step by step but i don't get a WIRED connection, and i don't seem to have a usbEthUp.sh script. i did a ls *.sh in my /usr/bin folder but there are not usbEth scripts >_> Am i doing something wrong?

I don't think the smc2208 would need to use the script anyways since it's based on rtl8150. Anybody out there that can help me? What should i do

Oh, and you theres a typo on the date for the wiki. "The USB LAN Package has been updated to support the latest version of Diablo as of 08/21/08; if you're having problems make sure that you have version 0.4.5 installed."

What is the point of USB ethernet?
I can see how a USB-modem (e.g. 3G) might be useful.
But what is the point of USB ethernet when wifi access points are so small and cheap? Or ad-hoc wifi, or bluetooth.

It's for when you're at a site where there's only wired Ethernet and you're not allowed (for policy reasons) to connect a wi-fi adapter, e.g. at workplaces.

To tack onto TA-t3's spot-on response: it's another connectivity option. That's not a bad thing.

Or you simply don't have an electric socket.
