I think you are right, Most of the pics I found do not look like it, but I found this photo.

Looks like Pokeweed.

The berries are poisonous, but good for making dye/paint. We smashed some up when I was a kid, but my mom stopped us before we could actually smear them on anything but our fingers; we knew they were poisonous, and had no plans to ingest them, but when you're 9, mothers are paranoid...

The leaves are also toxic, but you can make poke salad (a tasty dish, I've heard) by boiling them in at least 3 changes of water to detoxify... wasn't interested, then or now.

Not to be confused with Deadly Nightshade, or "belladonna". That actually does have some, um, recreational uses.

EDIT: I'd have to agree more with Benson on this one. It does look more like Pokeweed.

much better picture. I now withdraw my assumption. Not sure how many biologists you'll find in this forum. Good luck!

Thanks for starting this thread, blue! I have the same thing in my yard and thought it was a potato plant. They are beautiful bushes, but maybe I should get rid of them (2 at the moment)... I like that they attract birds, but I worry about my dogs nibbling them...
