Well thanks a lot mikkov but I need just a little more prodding...so how do I fix this? Where do I edit a file/make changes to reflect in the tablet?

you could give output of 'cat /tmp/resolv.conf.wlan0'

All I really can say that your ad-hoc connection is not set up correctly. Maybe windows box is not routing packets or it doesn't serve dns address via dhcp. (I have never used connection sharing from windows nor have windows to test.)

Maybe not a very helpful suggestion, but perhaps you might be able to find a wifi access point in your area & try it from there.
l did find that l had to enable the extras repository to accessa lot of the programs, but the 'basic' stuff liKe sKype just installed straight away for me using a wifi router.

~ $ cat /tmp/resolv.conf.wlan0
domain mshome.net
nameserver 192.168.0.1

Unless you can comment on this and suggest something, I guess I'll just have to try connecting to a regular wireless router and see where things go from there.

In that, in turn, I run into another problem:
Plz advise on this:http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...704#post221704

thanks already!

OK, unless you're running a dns server on your laptop, that's not going to work. BUT, since it is working, at least for google, etc., it's obvious your laptop is running a DNS server; so, I blame caching.

Mea Culpa Caching...but what to do about it?

Dunno; don't know the first thing about Windows ICS, but you'll have to find some way to flush the DNS cache.

Tablet itself is running a caching nameserver too..

You could try this:
1. Select your connection from Control Panel -> Connectivity -> Connections for Edit
2. Goto to Advanced (click two times Next first)
3. Select IP Addresses
4. Uncheck Auto-retrieve DNS
5. Enter DNS server ip from your laptop settings.
