iirc, nokia grabbed a gps map company some time ago, and has been using that stuff on their phones ever since. i guess its just another case of "differentiation" for sake of marketing...

that, and having a two way bridge with the nokia map system on the phone (as i do believe that gps data can be pushed to the map app for navigation on nokia phones).

I mean they don't expect people to change from whatever account they're using to Nokia Chat, do they? It would be cool to have it as a generic XMPP-client, but the way it is restricted to Ovi makes it pretty much useless.
I've got 3 or so different accounts setup on my N810, I can accept and send IM messages to any of them, assuming there's someone online. This Ovi based one just means I'll be able to talk to people on their mobiles.

Would be good to have location built into Telepathy

your missing the point:

a) you don't need an ovi-account to talk to people on their mobiles. Nokia Chat is XMPP-based, so just use whatever jabber-account you have and add them to your roster. The people who use their mobiles do need an ovi-account though, because Nokia doesn't allow them to use the accounts they already have.

b) the reason why this doesn't work is that nobody i know is willing to add my new ovi-account to their roasters. (well, almost nobody.) they already added me, so why do it a 2nd time? this, of course, makes using my ovi-account less fun because i don't get presence information. it would just work without any problems if nokia alllowed me to connect to any jabber server with the Nokia Chat software on my phone.
