If the 770 had java support most of those important things would porobably be taken care of.

I just started getting the components to develop for the 770 this weekend (when I should be working on another project ) but if I could just jump into netbeans and dev for it, then i'd been all over it way before now. Not to mention the code already out there.

I'd guess the answer would be found when examining the Symbian approach of nokia vs java. Anyone know the reasoning?

Are we looking for JAVA or JAVASCRIPT for the Nokia 770?

My friend, Paul T, told me that JavaScript is NOT Java.

I'm sure we are talking about Java and not JavaScript. JavaScript works quite well [in many cases] on the 770. It's Java that we want to get working on the tablet. It's definitely possible to get working, but I would be happy just knowing flash 9 for Linux could work on the thing once it's completed. At least flash 7 would be an improvement over the current version 6, but I digress...we ARE talking about Java, not flash here.

How about gcj? Native-compiled java should perform quite well. Since the gcc toolchain is working, I (perhaps naively) assume this wouldn't be a major undertaking.

My comments on the above-- yes, we're talking about Java, not JavaScript, and yes, I agree that it's likely a Jazelle licensing issue, but no one seems to know authoritatively. Would be nice to get Nokia to comment.

Inital GCJ work is promising. Expect a build sometime tomorrow.

...I never thought I'd be the Java point man :P

I still think the biggest obstacle (but also the biggest advantage) will be Hildonising AWT/Swing - in particular ensuring that menus don't appear as menu bars, and VKB integration.

gcj could be very interesting, indeed.

Update on the Java for the 770 front:

Java specialist /k/ will release its entire Java runtime environment for embedded systems. An evaluation version for Nokia's 770 Internet tablet is currently available [see links below for details]. This could prove very interesting.

I think that the 770 direct-link is broken... (09/sept/2006), I'll try later.
