We will be able to built different kind of high-performance multimedia computers with touch screen that fit into your pocket. How to call these devices that are somewhat a crossover of Mobile Internet Devices, Netbooks and Smart Handhelds? I'm open to hear your suggestion.
do we get a percentage of sales if our idea is used?

"Pocket Computer"

It's a niche product, so the name needs to instantly convey what it is and isn't.

People who care about open source will easily find out from the specifications that it runs Linux, so that doesn't need to be in the name.

Roger.

'netlet' is even worse than what we have now.. it says absolutely zero about what the device is. 'netbook' is another one I never understood the point of, mind.

Linux Pocket Computer? Not bad... What about the mobility aspect? Since we have HSPA cellular data and VoIP voice telephony, do that aspect of communication need to be represented or is it given nowadays that any meaningful UMPC/Netbook has HSPA incorporated?

Who says that all Maemo-based products will be niche-products? I don't think that anybody would object, if devices built on Maemo 5 will find more general appeal among digital natives. That's why we put a decent processor it, support for a high-definition camera, UI acceleration, and HSPA cellular data: all ingredients for a decent Nseries "multimedia computer".

Other series of silly names to consider:
iLet? Nettab? Nettool? Netbuddy? Norganiser? Morganiser?

serious, what's wrong with "tabletpc"?

"Netlet" is broken. Say it out loud a few times to see.

Including "linux" in the name is short sighted - it is an incidental feature. Even though it is the best feature - they just used the most sensible platform available.

Pocket Computer describes what it is, but is 5 syllables. Forget it. The shortening is PC ferchrissakes!

Using "nokia" in the name of a type of device is plain stupid.

While "MID" is not a particularly good name from a descriptive perspective, it does have presence already. The nokia n[89]xx series is mobile, internet focussed and a device.

So why isn't it a MID? Is there a platform specification somewhere that the nokias do not conform to?

Because it is pretty clearly understood what a tablet PC is, and this is not one of them.

Because it's an Intel marketing term that describes something slightly bigger than an internet tablet that uses an Atom processor?

I anybody's wondering why you're not likely to see many contributions from the old timers, it's because this topic has been discussed to death in the past. I'll leave it up to somebody A. Not on a tablet and B. Not lazy to dig up the links.
