Hmm, maybe rather than paying someone to help people package their apps, you should work with Khertan to enhance his Pypackager app to help everyone to package maemo apps. It has fallen behind the times with the introduction of the Autobuilder, and it has never had all of the features that I would like, but it is a really good start... It would need to run on a desktop as well as on the tablet, it would need to expose all the control file fields, and it could even hand-hold through the whole autobuilder process...
You have a point, dpkg-divert is what you would want.

I think Khertan abandoned it in favour of his py2deb. I just debianise anything I want to upload now so I don't know about PyPackager...

Or how about: Did anybody recommend it as a Fremantle star?

On-device packaging really isn't a realistic solution for everybody (or even most people), anyway. Though there's certainly no reason the debmaster couldn't lend a hand and help Khertan out a bit.

Either way, the job isn't just "helping people packaging", it's also going to include work on the repositories, maemo.org and Extras.

And washing GeneralAntilles' car. Yep, it's that "other duties as assigned" that'll get ya.

I'm not sure why gophers take priority in my muscle memory, but so it goes.

This would be great! Most of the problems I've had are with packaging, so I've done a very basic deb or hacked ubuntu or debian release source trees. I'm getting a lot better, but am no guru yet. But it would be wonderful to have one available.
